An Unexpected Gift

Chapter 2- 'Irony in its entirety'

I sat on the edge of my bed with my hand on my knee, trying to down a cup of French vanilla coffee with whipped cream and my favorite mint décor on top. It's supposed to make my impending day seem a little bit better but who knows, I kept subconsciously repeating the phrase, "Don't worry it will all be over soon". Sighing heavily,

I got up, and strolled to the kitchen to wash my now emptied cup when suddenly a thought hit me 'Why not pay a guy to pose as your boyfriend for that weekend?', it seemed crazy so I shook my head and looked around to confirm I was alone in my apartment, reaffirming that I was I proceeded to put the cup in the dispenser when it hit me again, 'Like an escort!' I was pretty convinced at this point that I was going bunkers so I hastily got ready for work so as not to be late....... Again! 

With everybody busy as usual I stepped out of the elevator onto the ninth floor of my office building, I could smell the scent of coffee of all various kinds blended into one majestic junkie paradise, I saw papers flying, and heard computer keys banging as usual while everybody busied themselves with their pending task for the day, some smiling with idle chatter others assuming their business personas, from mail room guys to secretaries to bosses who respond to bigger bosses like me! You see unlike the majority of 27-year-olds I am one of the fortunate ones. I have a business and law degree from University, and I have my own apartment, and a car ..... it might not be a beauty but it gets me around and I am on my way to becoming the head of my firm, what more could a girl ask for? I've been so focused on my dream that I achieved it all without achieving much! Irony in its entirety. "Good Morning!" I opened my office door to find Dom assuming my position at my desk with his legs crossed and a brilliant smile plastered across his model-like face. "Somebody is extremely happy this morning, is there something I missed?" "Nope! Well.... Jackie took me out to dinner!" Watching his now excited expression he continued "Oh my god girl I'm telling you if I am not in love I don't know what love is, we went to a little spot called Te amo me, Amor, over in 27th and It was simply breathtaking"

I stared at him as he now looked so serene as he went on and on about his gay partner and their night out, I was so lost in his expression that I only snapped back when he said to marry. "Shit! What time is it?", "It's 9:45 am What's wrong?", "Get your things we have fifteen minutes to get the bridal boutique across town or I am dead!" Hurriedly we raced out of the office into the lobby, signaled the valet for the car then we were on our way as I pulled onto the street.

"Oh, my heavens! Kay k is that you" My sister Lacy said with a high-pitched, ear-bending scream to follow. "Oh my God Kay I missed you chica! I haven't seen you in so long, I missed you!" Then the introductions began, She had brought three friends. "Kay K this is Shelly, Lea, and Patience my longtime friends, and the bridesmaids. These girls looked like 'material girls' hair neatly combed, pencil skirts, buttoned-down blouses, and stilettos. It had crossed my mind to ask if they were lawyers or call girls but I think I was being too forward. I guess whoever coined the phrase 'show me your company and I'll tell you who you are' knew a thing or two, I couldn't help but wonder if jeans and t-shirts were too much to ask for. I was away in my thoughts when Dom touched me, I snapped back to see everyone staring at me. "Are you alright" he whispered. My sister in the middle of her speech continued, "Girls meet the maid of honor, my sister Nastacijah Nioma Kadine Foster" She giggles, "But I call her Kay K for short!", "Nice to meet you!" Patience chimed in "And who is this may I ask, your husband?" but before I could reply "No this is Dominic her gay secretary!", "Geez Lace!" I snapped "Sorry!" she had this puppy dog sympathy look on her face, I was a bit upset and that was evident but I softened because even being 22 and a bride to be she is still my baby sister, "We are ready for your fitting Ms. Foster"....... "Ok!"

"Oh, My God! If it fits you any better it wouldn't be yours girl!" the girls joined Dom in screaming while I was busy working away on my phone's screen, "Kay K? How do I look?" my attention was now demanded as my baby sister stared wide eye into mine asking how she looked in her wedding gown to be, reminding me of when she was eight and the pink teddy bear she called curly fell in the tub of water, She and that bear was inseparable, "Breathtaking" was all I could muster up while my eyes began to sting with tears. "So who's your date?" The question was so random it startled me a bit "huh!?"  Lacy repeated, "Who is your date?", "Ummm I uuum..... I" I stuttered, Dom hastily answered "He is to fly in two days before, you will loooooove him" he added, Lying with an exaggerative eye roll, "He's so busy I don't know how they spend so much time together!". He stared me in the eyes as to say 'Bitch I'm saving your sorry ass, so play along' I know I shouldn't have opened this can of worms and could kick myself in the ass fifty times over for it but nonetheless. "Yes he'll be here by then so you'll get to know him", "So who's this Mr. Mysterious? I've never heard you mention him, Mom will be thrilled, Dominic I could just kiss.....", "No Ugh hunny pie! I bat for the next team remember!?". Dominic quickly and sarcastically interrupted Lacy's praises, flapping his wrest to make his point while crossing his legs. I swallowed heavily because whether I liked it or not I was now a cat that had just been dipped in water, I was now clueless, worried as to where I was going to find a makeshift man that I could fake being in love with for a whole weekend complete with family drama, thanks to my secretary!
