Ever since the day Madison's mother died of cancer, she couldn't smile. She couldn't laugh, she couldn't even muster up a fake smile to tell everyone she was okay. All she felt was dull, numb, sad, angry. No happiness or joy was left.
Currently, Madison was sitting on her bed with a blanket wrapped tightly around her body as she stared blankly ahead towards the window. Today marks exactly one year since she died. Madison's brother has called, her dad, all of her family pretty much. But she just couldn't find it in her to answer.
You may think that she's being selfish, but hearing their voices talking about her mother would send her into something she won't ever be able to get out of. Even her boyfriend, Jamie, hasn't seen his girlfriend in a year. For all she knows he could be out and cheating. And she wouldn't blame him.
While Madison was stuck in her thoughts without noticing anything in the world, she saw a figure stand directly in front of her and wipe her cheeks with the pads of their thumbs. She looked up and saw Jamie standing there. It was that moment that she realized she had been crying, quite hard too.
"It's okay sweetheart." Jamie said, pulling Madison's head into his chest while wrapping his arms around her shoulders. The woman started sobbing as she let herself melt into his warm and comforting embrace, remembering everything about her mother. Every moment with her and even just the small things, like how she looked or how she laughed when you would make a stupid joke.
After a bit, she stopped crying. Jamie sat beside her and pulled her into his chest gently, giving her any moment to resist. She shared stories with him as he lightly laughed at some.
"You know," Madison started, gaining Jamie's attention. "She would've loved you. Just bad timing, I guess."
"I bet I would've loved her. Especially since we have something in common." He replied, a small smile placed on his face.
"What's that?" She asked him, looking up.
"We both love you." Jamie replied cheekily.
At his words, a smile made its way onto her face. His smile grew when he saw that he managed to make the girl who hasn't been happy in a year, smile.
"There's that beautiful smile." He whispered, playing with the ends of her hair.
Madison blushed and pushed her head deeper into his chest. The brunettes chest vibrated as he chuckled.
"Can we watch Modern Family?" The woman asked Jamie in a mumbled voice.
"Of course we can." He laughed, hugging her tight.
That's how they spent the rest of the night. Cuddled up on the couch, with ice cream and Modern Family.
