James POV:
I have been patrolling the streets of the city for hours, trying to make sense of the latest string of drug-related crimes that had been plaguing the area. I was tired and hungry, and my mind was beginning to wander as I made my way down a dimly-lit alleyway.
Suddenly, I saw something out of the corner of my eye that made me stop in my tracks. There, slumped against the wall of an abandoned building, was a young girl. Her eyes were closed, and her breathing was shallow. A needle hung limply from her arm, and the stench of decay and filth hung heavy in the air. It was clear that she was just another victim of the city's drug epidemic.
I approached the girl cautiously, my hand on my gun. I knelt beside her and checked her pulse. It was weak, but still there. I called for an ambulance and tried to rouse her, but she remained unresponsive. I noticed her purse lying nearby and rifled through it, looking for identification. I found a driver's license that showed the girl's name was Emily, and that she was only 19 years old.
As I impatiently waited for the ambulance to arrive, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for the girl. I knew all too well the toll that addiction could take on a person, and I couldn't help but wonder what had led her to this point.
When the ambulance finally arrived, I rode with the girl named Emily to the hospital. I watched as the medical team worked feverishly to save her life, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for their dedication and skill.
As I sat in the waiting room, I couldn't shake the image of Emily from my mind. There was something hauntingly beautiful about her, despite her obvious pain and suffering. I found myself wondering what her life was like, and what had led her to become addicted to drugs.
While waiting in the waiting room, I decided to rest my eyes for a bit before trying to find out about the angel in the hospital bed, not knowing that I fell asleep in the process.
—
It wasn't until the next day that I learned that Emily had survived. I quickly made my way to her hospital room and introduced myself. She looked up at me with vacant eyes, and I felt a stab of pity for her.
"Emily, my name is James. I found you yesterday and called the ambulance. I just wanted to check in on you and see how you're doing."
Her beautiful green eyes looked at me for a moment, as if trying to place my face. Then she spoke in a weak voice.
"Thanks for saving me. I don't know why you bothered."
I could see the pain and despair etched on her face, and I knew that I had to save such a beautiful girl from herself "what do you mean?" I asked while furrowing my eyebrows,
"I... I'm nothing. You should've just left me in that stupid alley..." she sniffles and wiped her eyes. I placed my hand on her tear-stained cheek, trying to get her to look at me. She refused and kept her head down.
I rubbed her cheek gently with the pad of my thumb. "Look at me, Emily." She finally looked up at me, as more tears fell from her eyes again. "I want to help you. Will you let me?" She sighed and closed her eyes, nodding.
I'm sorry this chapter is so short! This is my first story! Can you please let me know how I did? The chapters will get longer, I promise!
