Emily's POV:

I don't remember falling back asleep after talking to the cop, James. He was sweet and I don't know why. He told me he wanted to save me. Me of all people.

There's a knock at the door, interrupting my thoughts "Come in!" I croak out. As soon as the words were out, I see a head peek in at me, James. the detective who saved me earlier. He left his card for me in case I needed him,

"Hey" he sent me a small smile and waved "just checking in on you. May I come in?"

Smiling back, I nodded. He entered and sat on the chair next to my bed "How are you feeling, Emily?"

"I'm feeling okay, I guess..." I said quietly, not really sure what to say. But after a long silence, I look up at him to find him already studying me with those hazel eyes.

He began to speak but before he could, there was another knock at the door. Not waiting for a reply this time, the person just walked in.

"Hello darling, I'm Nurse Kathy. You're very lucky that Mr. Lawson found you when he did. You were in very bad condition." The nurse then proceeded to give me a check up.

I looked at James "I-I don't know how I'll ever repay you for saving me, Mr. Lawson..."

"You don't need to repay me. And please, call me James." He gave me a smile and I sent one back while nurse Kathy continued the check up.

When nurse Kathy finished up with her check up, James spoke again "So do you have a place to go after you leave the hospital?"

I was currently living at the women's shelter, but I didn't want to tell him that, so I didn't tell him that part "I uh, I do. I'm staying with a friend currently."

James nodded "When you get discharged, I'll take you home."

"No, no! I can get there myself! I mean you've done so much already..."

James shook his head "Nonsense, I wanna make sure you get home okay."

I took a deep breath in and hid my face from him before speaking again "Th-there's no friend..." I speak quietly.

The room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. I felt so embarrassed, but I deserve to feel this way.

"I'm sorry?" James asked bringing me back from my thoughts.

"Umm, there's no friend. I'm staying at the women's shelter..." he just stared at me confused so I continued "you know, the one on Bro-"

"I know where you're talking about" he interrupted me. "Why did you tell me there was a friend?"

I shrugged one shoulder, looking away from him "It's not exactly something I like to announce."

He nodded as if understanding "Okay then, when you get out I can take you there. Just to ensure you get there safely." I smiled and nodded.

The rest of the night was spent with James asking me questions about how I ended up on the side of that building and me dodging the questions. He was a cop, if he knew how many different types of drugs I had in my body, he would've thrown me in jail right here and now.

I can't go to jail again, I won't.

Before my thoughts could wander too far, I was once again interrupted by a knock on the door, revealing nurse Kathy again.

"I'm sorry, sir, but visiting hours are over. I'm afraid you'll have to leave the girl for the night." She sent the officer an apologetic smile.

James looked at me "Will you be okay for the night?" I nodded and gave him a reassuring smile. "Okay. I'm going to be here first thing tomorrow morning" and before I could protest, he was out the door.

I laid back in the hard hospital bed thinking about James. Why is he so worried? I can take care of myself. I thought to myself, before falling asleep.

The next day, I woke up feeling much better then yesterday. I got out of bed with wobbly legs, walking to the bathroom to freshen up.

I looked at myself in the mirror and didn't like who stared back at me.

I used to have beautiful, sun kissed skin with the brightest shade of green in my eyes that you could imagine. Gorgeous long, black hair. The most beautiful long legs.

Now, now I had pale skin with grayish-green eyes with purple bags underneath them. My once long black hair now was shoulder length and dyed red. I hated it.

Ignoring the disgusting person staring back at me, I washed my face and gulped the water from the faucet, clearing my throat some.

I finished up, and searched the room for my purse. When I found it, I was looking through it trying to find my stash. I really need a hit. Like right now. But as I continued to search, I couldn't find the coke. It was gone.

I threw the purse across the room and fell to my knees, hyperventilating. Finding it hard to breathe, my hands went to my hair and tugged, almost ripping my hair out.

I was too distracted to notice the person in the room until they bent down to me in the floor and tried to pry my hands from my hair "Hey, hey. Shhh... what's going on?"

"I... I... it's g-gone." Is all I was able to get out. I needed a hit. I needed it now. I looked up to see who was touching me. It was James, looking worried.

"What's gone? "He asked in confusion. I shook my head, still struggling to breathe. "Listen, I need you to calm down, okay? Take deep breaths." He gave up on trying to pry my hands away and instead put his hands on my cheeks and took deep breaths, hoping I'd repeat him. So, I did.

Taking slow, deep breaths in, I closed my eyes and leaned my forehead on his chest. I felt him tense up at first, but then felt his hands rubbing my back slow and soothingly.

"I uhh... I have an idea." James spoke up. I looked up at him to show I was listening to him. "Come stay with me."
