Over the next two years, The Howling Commandos went around Europe, destroying as many Hydra bases as they could find. Emilia went on as many missions as she could as their medic, being left a safe distance away or back at their base camp for afterwards. She made friends with the entire team, she loved the entire team like family. Steve and Dugan being the two she was the closest to, aside from Bucky, of course.
Emilia felt honored that Bucky was not only willing but ecstatic to stay the night with her whenever he had the chance. She'd curl up against him, as closley as she possibly could and breathe in his intoxicating scent until she was lulled into a beautiful sleep, dreaming of the life they were going to have when this was over.
Emilia had spent the last week back in Manhattan visiting her parents, a welcomed distraction from the last two years of chaos. But she was already ready to be back in Europe. She'd already missed Bucky. She knew their last mission was coming up when she got back, that after that, they'd get to start the life they dreamed of so fondly.
"Tell me, sweetheart, what's kept you away for so long?" Emilia's mother asked as her and her parents sat at the kitchen table together, enjoying their last day together before Emilia was set to head back.
"Ma, you know the answer to that. I'm saving lives." Emilia answered.
"No, baby girl. We know you were offered to come home after you were presumed dead. Why didn't you?" Her father asked.
Emilia blushed, covering her hand with her face. "There's a man.." She explained shyly.
"Of course there is. No infantry men, baby girl, they're no good." Her father explained. Emilia let out a quiet giggle.
"Tell me about this man, is he a combat medic?" Her father asked.
"Yes, sweetheart, tell us everything." Her mother pleaded.
Emilia sat her elbows on the table, holding her chin in her hands. "Sargeant James Bucky Barnes, formerly 107th. Now he's a Sniper for The Howling Commandos." She explained with a giddy smile.
"107th? Baby girl, that's infantry." Her father said with a small, disappointed sigh.
"Daddy, James is different. He's a good man. He says when he's done with this last mission, he's done. He wants to marry me, live together in Brooklyn. He wants me to write my book, says he's going to support us." Emilia bragged.
"He thinks he's going to take my little girl across the bridge? Away from us?" Her father asked.
"It's not like that, daddy. He said we'd come to every holiday at your house, he and Steve, his best friend. And it's not like it's not a simple drive across the bridge away." Emilia explained.
Emilia's mother slightly slapped her father's hand as it rested on the table. "Honey, don't torment the girl. You act like you didn't take me from Pennsylvania to Manhattan for you. Your James and his friend Steve are always welcomed here." Her mother said with a warm smile.
"Fine. I need to meet this man first though." Her father settled with.
"Honey, you're tormenting the girl. You know my father didn't approve of you, but that didn't stop you from proposing." Emilia's mother argued lightheartedly.
"Grandpa didn't approve of daddy?" Emilia asked, her focus shifting to her mother. Her mother laughed lightly, nodding in agreement. "Not in the slightest. He wanted me to marry an engineer, not a soldier." Her mother explained.
"Darling, I'm a Marine, not a soldier." Her dad said with a half laugh. He took ahold of his wife's hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. Emilia watched the two happily, how they looked at each other with nothing but love.
"Tell me about how you met again, please." Emilia pleaded. She wanted a cute story to remember before she returned to Europe tomorrow. She also wanted to tell Bucky their love story when she got back to Europe.
Emilia's mother smiled to her father, giving his hand a squeeze. "We went to high school together. He asked me to go steady when I was 15 and he was 17. We dated the last two years of high school. Then when your daddy joined the military, he proposed. Your grandpa said no, he wasn't allowed to marry me. But your daddy didn't care, he proposed anyway. We've been together ever since. 36 years I've been with your father, I'm praying I'm lucky enough to get another 40." Her mother cooed.
Emilia and her parents talked late into the night, Emilia finally falling asleep on the couch, her parents on each side of her.
"William, we can't hassle our girl too much about this James man. We have to let her do what she's going to do. If she loves him, we have to respect that." Emilia's mother said calmly as Emilia slept between the two of them on the couch.
"I know, Louise. I had to hassle the girl, see if she really loved this man enough to argue with me." Her father said with a quiet laugh.
"You're a cruel man, honey." Louise said with a laugh. "I'm headed to bed, don't stay up too late." She said. She stood up, lightly kissing her husband before heading upstairs to sleep.
William, however, stayed up most of the night. Emilia sound asleep with her head in his lap. He just stroked her hair lightly, watching her peacefully sleep. He was heartbroken when a few soldiers showed up at his door two years ago, telling them their daughter was missing in action and presumed dead. He was worried sick when only a few weeks later, the same men showed back up at their door, telling them Emilia was found safe. He wondered what happened to her while she was missing, but she never spoke about it. Even her letters didn't mention her time missing, they didn't mention this James man either. She simply asked how life at home was, bragged about saving men, talked about how many friends she was making. There was an entire letter a year and a half ago talking about all the foods she missed, all the recipes she wanted written down for her as well.
The day Emilia told her parents she was coming home, Louise started cooking. She made every dinner on the list Emilia had given her. She also baked cookies to send Emilia back to Europe with. More than she could ever eat on her own, enough to share with all her friends back in Europe, William assumed now she would simply share them with James, however.
William sat with Emilia all night, finally falling asleep when the sun had started to rise, giving himself only a few hours to rest before he had to be up to see Emilia off.
Emilia woke up when the sun was shining in on her face. She could smell her mother's famous apple butter. She happily climbed off the couch, heading into the kitchen to see her mother making fresh waffles with fruit and her homemade apple butter was just cooling from being canned on the counter.
"Good morning, sweetheart. I know I already made you cookies to go back with, but I want you to take a couple jars of apple butter, too." Emilia's mother said with a warm smile.
"You spoil me, ma. James will already love you before he even gets home." Emilia was beaming as she climbed up and sat on one of the barstools in the kitchen, waiting for breakfast to be done.
"How'd I already know you were going to share with this James boy." William teased. Emilia rolled her eyes. "Daddy, you have to give him a chance. James is a good man." Emilia defended.
William approached Emilia, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and kissing her forehead. "I'm sure he is baby girl. Can't wait to meet him." Her dad finally admitted.
Emilia and her parents ate their breakfast with only casual chatter, avoiding the fact that once breakfast was done, Emilia had to leave again. Louise happily packed up several jars of apple butter as well as several dozen cookies into Emilia's bag.
A horn loudly honking jolted the group as they sat on the couch together. "That's my ride. Don't worry, this is the last mission. Then James and I will be coming home." Emilia reassured her parents.
"Good, we look forward to meeting him, sweetheart." Louise said happily. She gave her daughter a kiss on the cheek, hugging onto her tightly for a moment. Her father took her mother's place immediately, hugging onto her tightly. "Save some lives, baby girl." He said before letting Emilia out of his grasp.
