Améile walked around the barricade, Grantaire following close behind. "Stop worrying Grantaire." She said pulling up the jacket that was way to big for her. He pulled her arm making her face him. "If anything happens to you I wouldn't be able to live with myself and think of what Courfeyrac would do to me. Just please stay near me." He pleaded. She nodded and pulled him into a hug. She looked behind and into the alley behind them, to see a man staring at them in the shadows. "Grantaire, I have a bad feeling about that man, he looks familiar." Grantaire pulled away and casually looked behind him. "I'll go check with Enjolras. Don't move." He walked into the café to join the rest of the boys leaving the stranger and Améile alone. Améile pulled her hat down more and as usual ignored Grantaire's warning and walked over to the man. "Excuse me sir but if you wouldn't mind helping us in the café?" Améile said in her best man voice.
"Of course." The mysterious man stepped into the dim light Améile recognized the man as Javert. "Enemy spy!" she shouted trying to run to the café when Javert spun her around and his fist connected with her face. She fell to the floor as Grantaire ran out of the café followed by the other students. Grantaire pulled her to her feet, while Courfeyrac and Joly held Javert, preventing him from running away. Enjolras and the rest held a gun to his head. "How long have you been here?" he got no answer. "What have you been doing?" Javert laughed. "You boys think that plotting against the State will go unpunished? You deserve whatever is coming for you!" he shouted. "We'll think of what to do with you later." Enjolras nodded at Combeferre and he knocked Javert on the head with the end of his pistol, knocking him out cold and they carried him into the tavern.
"I told you!" Grantaire lectured while inspecting her bloody nose. "But did you listen? No! Do you ever listen?" he said tearing of a bit of his shirt and held it against her nose. "No and I'm sorry but what if I didn't warn everyone he would have slipped past and given all the information back to the National Guard!" she said proudly. "Yes, yes good job." There was a distant sound of marching boots and shouting. "Stay close and I mean it this time." He grabbed his riffle from the wall and her one. The students assembled near the barricade and waited. "Who's there?" The National Guard shouted. Enjolras and Marius climbed the barricade. "French Revolution!" Marius shouted. "FIRE!" There was a ringing of bullets in the air. Grantaire pulled Améile behind a wall. "Stay!" she nodded. He ran back. A sudden quietness fell on the barricade and all the attention was one Marius.
"I'll blow the barricade!" Marius shouted as a boy fell to the ground. "BACK!" The National Guard shouted while all the soldiers retreated. He climbed down the barricade to see the boy who took a shot for him. "Ponine?" he sat down next to her. "Marius! I'm sorry!" she whispered softly. "Don't talk we need to get you help." She shook her head weakly. "I'll be fine. I'll be in a better place now." Her voice was getting softer. "Promise to look after Améile and Gavourache?" Marius nodded and kissed her on the forehead. "I love you Ponine." At that moment Améile emerged from behind the wall and saw Ponine. Gavourache watched from the alleyway "EPONINE!" she shouted throwing her hat on the floor her hair falling over her face and sitting on the other side of her. "Améile, what are you doing here?" Eponine asked weakly. "Shh sh. Don't talk. We need to get you some help." The tears began to trickle down her face. "Please don't leave me now!" Améile sobbed quietly. "I love you with all my heart. I'll be with you always!" Eponine's eyes fluttered close and one final breath escaped her lips.
Gavourache ran up into the café. "Eponine?" Améile shook her sister the tears spilling from her eyes. "Please Ponine wake up!" she shouted. Combeferre lifted Eponine from the ground. "Please don't leave me!" she whispered. Courfeyrac walked over to her and held her close. "It's okay! Everything will be okay." He brushed her hair back. Améile pushed him off her and grabbed the gun from Courfeyrac's belt and ran up the stairs of the barricade. "Do you think that this will stop us! You killed my sister! Is that the worse you can do? Or do you have more to throw at me? Come on give it your best shot." She shouted at the soldiers, one shot a warning shot that flew past her. "Someone get her down!" Grantaire shouted. Courfeyrac ran up and grabbed her by the waist as she kicked and screamed. Courfeyrac held her tight and pulled her into a hug, letting her cry into his shoulder. The rain poured hard. "Get the gun powder into the tavern." Someone shouted. The boys carried on with the work.
"You need to get home!" Courfeyrac said as he cradled her. "I've lost my sister and I'm not going to loose you or Gavourache." She said stroking his face and planting her lips softly on his. Courfeyrac gave her one last hug and left her to her thoughts. Marius walked over to her. "I promised Ponine I would look after you and Gavourache! And I never break my promises." He said sitting next to her. Améile rummaged in her pocket and took out an old silver necklace. "This was Eponine's and she gave it to me six years ago when our parents kicked us out. I have a feeling she would've wanted you to have it." She placed it into Marius' hand. "Thank you but..." Améile shook her head. "Trust me I know she would've wanted you to have it." She interrupted. He nodded. "And don't worry, everything will be okay, we'll all be okay!" Marius said putting an arm around Améile and she leaned her head against his shoulder. "Can you promise that?"
