Marius laid in the bed. He slowly opened his eyes, blinking a couple of times, trying to adjust to the light, tears formed in his eyes and spilled down his face as he stared up at the ceiling. The memories of yesterday played through his head over and over again. The screams and shouts of his friends. Améile holding him. He had to find her, the hope that she might be alive got him out of his bed and ready.bfinding it difficult with his sling. "Where are you going?" his Grandfather asked as he ran down the steps. "Out." he ran out the door pulling the coat over his shoulders. He ran down the streets and to Améle's apartment. He knocked on the door and there was no answer, he then opened the door which was unlocked as always. 'Améile?' The floor creaked under him. He went to her bedroom. The bed was empty and unmade. He ran out the apartment to the cafè. There were women cleaning the streets. Blood was everywhere. 'AMÉILE!' He shouted looking around the street. He walked into the alleyway to see all his friends lying side by side unmoving. That last bit of hope he held onto so dearly had been shattered. He walked along and stopped dead in his tracks to see Améile lying beside Courfeyrac hand in hand. Their ring glistening on her hand. 'I am so sorry that I couldn't protect you.' He whispered, he looked at her peaceful figure once more and walked into the cafè. The door was smashed and blood stained the walls.
He walked up the stairs and sat on the chair by the table where he and his friends would laugh at. He fidgeted in his pockets and felt something cool on his fingers. It was the necklace Améile gave him before she died. He looked at it more closely. 'Marius.' He heard a soft whisper. He recognised the voice. 'Améile?' He looked around the distroyed room. 'Marius.' He heard again. 'Don't shed another tear.' Suddenly Améile appeared in front of him. She looked alive and fine. She smiled softly down at him. 'How are you here?' She shook her head. 'I'm always here Marius, right beside you.' Tears spilt down his face. 'I'm sorry I couldn't protect you, or anyone else.' She nodded. 'Don't cry, were all in a better place now. A happier place.'. She placed a soft hand on his cheek. 'Don't forget us and don't forget what we died for, for change and that's why you survived. So our efforts won't be forgotten, you have to keep looking forward and carry on with the revolution.' She slowly kissed his forehead and backed away slowly. 'Please don't leave me.' He cried standing up and holding her hand. Everything felt real, like she was really there. 'I never left you. I'm always with you.' And with that she faded away leaving Marius holding onto the cold air.
'Marius?' His heart sped up. 'Améile?' He turned around to see Cosette standing at the top of the stairs looking at him quizzically. 'Is everything okay?' She walked towards him. 'Your grandfather said I could find you here. What's the matter?' She pulled him into a hug. 'I miss them.' He bent down, crying into her shoulder. 'It's okay.'

It took Marius awhile to stop grieving for the loss of his friends, but he could never fully forget it. He thought of them everyday. Even spoke to them in prayer. A week after the fall of the barricade he and Cosette got married. And his friends were there with him, watching. They were happy that Marius had moved on, and happy that there is some hope for a better future that there efforts weren't in vain, and that they wouldn't be forgotten.
