Chapter Eight

Dear Diary, Today is my 17th birthday! I'm so excited! I'm having a party tomorrow. Today I'm just going to enjoy not having to work since Queen Raya gave me the day off to celebrate. I think I'm gonna go surprise X! I can't wait to see what present he got me. I'm sure it's gonna be awesome.

Dear Diary, I just got home from hanging out with X. It was a lot of fun. I couldn't imagine a better way to spend my birthday! When I got to his house he came right up to me and kissed me and then pulled out a little box and said to close my eyes. I closed them and I felt his hand on my wrist and then I felt him kiss the back of my hand before he said: "Ok open your eyes" when I did I looked at my wrist and there was a beautiful charm bracelet with 4 charms on it. There was a flower, a sun, a leaf, and a snowflake. Something for each season. He told me happy birthday and then sang our special song and we danced in his living room for a minute and then we made breakfast together and talked for a little while and then we packed a lunch and he took me to the hidden lake and we hung out over there until dinner time and he took me out to dinner. After that, we went back to his house and watched the sunset from his balcony (the view from there is really impressive), and then we went inside and made popcorn and watched movies until 11:45, and then I told him that I needed to get home. We weren't at all tired and I probably would have stayed for another couple of hours but I'm having the girls over for a sleepover tomorrow, well today I guess and we always stay up late telling secrets and playing truth or dare! Speaking of which, I'd better get to sleep.

That afternoon

Clarion set out the bowl of popcorn in the living room and looked around her.

"Perfect," she said and smiled at herself. She was already missing Milori. She pulled out her phone and checked the time. 4:00. "I've got time," she said. She'd told the girls not to show until 6. She shot off a quick text to Milori that said "Can you get away? I have to see you before the girls get here." he responded immediately "Border in 10" Clarion darted off to the border and waited. When Milori got there he said

"Hello, love."

"Hi."

"I have a new song for you. Consider this a second birthday present."

"Milori, the bracelet is plenty. I actually have a song for you this time."

"Ok. Fine. You win. But only because I love you so much and it's your birthday.

The song is Strangers by Maddie and Tae. The music video is on the page with the rest of the videos.

"So that was totally better than the song I had planned."

"Thanks. I love that song. Every time I hear it I think of you and how true it is. Sometimes I think about shouting at everyone "Hey! I'm in love with the next lord of Winter! Get over it!" but then I realize what kind of a reaction that might get. Not to mention what the queen would say when she finds out. I don't want to hide for much longer but we don't have a choice. We can show ourselves when I'm queen but until then I'm scared that people will criticize us too much."

"I get that, someone once told me that no matter what you do in life people will always criticize you. So you just have to do what makes you happy."

"Let me guess, someone is your sister."

"Ya. she's full of stuff like that and I don't even know where she gets it all. But trust me when I say this when you're queen I'll be your king, I'll stand with you, and together we will fight to make Pixie Hollow a perfect paradise for everyone, no matter what side of the border they come from."
