CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN : RUNAWAY

Once upon a time she opened her giant maw to cry a tale but all that came out was a gurgled cry, an animalistic howl to the night sky she couldn't see.

And perhaps that was tale enough.

For when the beast was found by hunters they had its eyes sewn shut; to prevent it from turning any mortal to stone.

They cut its tongue; to prevent it from casting a spell to enslave the mortal.

They cut its feet and wings; to prevent it from running further than its forest.

And they chained it to the willow tree; where the beast stayed trapped for centuries. And though the tree rotted and turned to dust the beast did not move.

This beast was named Savhina and alone she sat and alone she wept. Tears of blood dripped down her scales and every night she howled a gurgled cry to the moon and every night the moon shone a little brighter. Every night the stars danced a little more until one night, Adhara heard a voice.

The voice of her human.

And not so alone was the dragon who could not walk, or talk, or see.

Astra woke with a start, her mouth open wide and gasping for air. She had one hand wrapped around her neck, the claws digging into her neck.

The scent of blood permitted the air and Astra choked, wrenching her hands away. Looking down she stared at the dark red blood coating both hands. Her neck stung and when she tried to wipe the blood on her face she winced as her nails raked over her cheeks.

Lead must've been stacked on her shoulders because when she walked to the bathroom she stumbled and her legs shook. Gritting her teeth she pushed the bathroom door open and stared at her reflection. Just like the last time she'd stared at herself Astra couldn't find anything to admire.

The girl in the reflection looked scared, her lip quivered and her hands shook. She clenched hands but that wouldn't stop shaking.

The wounds on her neck and cheek had healed, and some of the blood had dried but it wasn't enough. She grabbed a fluffy towel and toiletry bag and walked down to the showers.

But before she could, the sound of a door opening stopped Astra dead in her tracks. A familiar face stared back at her, eyes wide and mouth agape he stared in shock.

Fuck.

Astra all but pushed passed him, or she would have if he had not grabbed her arm and for some reason she could not bring herself to pull away.

Shouto spoke then, his voice loud in the silence," What happened."

Astra didn't know where to begin and couldn't bring herself to look into his eyes," I don't know."

" Come with me, I'll help-"

Astra put her hands up in mock surrender,"Really it's ok. It was just a nightmare. I'll be fine."

And without a response she fled. It was dawn and no one was supposed to be up. He must have heard her. Astra opened the girls bathroom and stepped inside. What she hadn't expected was for the lights to be on and some of the girls to already be inside.

" Hey girlie, the early bird gets the worm am I right-" Mina's comment was cut off when she looked up from washing her face and the horroried expression on Mina's face was enough for Astra to duck her head and head into the showers.
