Ember traced the footsteps and marks of resistance left by the royals, creeping down the hallway with around ten soldiers. The screams and shouts became louder as they approached the dining hall. He signalled the soldiers to surround the room and secure all exits as he readied himself. With one signal from the soldiers, he straightened and opened the door, the rest of the soldiers not far behind.
'Ember!' The queen shouted from the ground, surrounded by men shrouded in black, their faces covered with masks. She was supporting her injured husband who was lying clenching his chest in a futile attempt to slow down the bleeding. Ember approached the two; worry painted over his face as he examined the wound.
'Your Highness!' Beads of sweat rolled down his face as he shuffled around to find a way to stop the blood seeping out of the King's limp body. He tore off a piece of cloth from his shirt, pressing down on the wound but the white fabric turned scarlet as soon as it touched the injury. Terror rose in both their eyes as the realization hit. The king wasn't going to come out alive from this attack. The next few seconds were frantic with both the queen and Ember trying their hardest to keep the blood from spilling out more than it had but it was unstoppable. The King drew a long, painful breath holding his wife's hand in both of his, shaking his head to tell all their attempts were futile. He looked her in the eyes, tears streaming down his aged face. He smiled at her, kissing her hand and mouthing an 'I love you,' before his entire body went lifeless.
The walls echoed with cries and screams. The queen clutched her husband's inanimate head to her heart, tears rolling down her cheeks. Ember sighed, burying his face in his blood-covered hands in disappointment. The queen's loud cries bounced off the walls of the grand palace, her hand still keeping the piece of fabric close to his chest in a desperate attempt to save her husband somehow still. She would have cried her soul out if the sound of suppressed giggles didn't fall on her ears. She looked up to see the raven-haired man sitting in front of her desperately trying to hold in his laugh.
'Ember?' The queen looked dumbfounded at the man who immediately lost all control on seeing her questioning expression. He was laughing hysterically, hitting the floor with his fist covered in the King's blood as if he saw the most hilarious thing in his life. Giggling, he stood up and leaned onto one of the intruders. 'Did you see that?' a high-pitched cackle escaped his mouth as he pointed at the dead king lying still in the queen's lap and then clapped his hands. He looked at the Queen who finally realized what had happened and sat there aghast.
'What happened, Mother? You look like you saw a ghost.' The raven-haired man finally crouched down a face level with her, a manic grin stuck to his face. 'And here I thought you were smarter than your idiot daughter.' He tore the King's body away from her lap, dropping it on the floor and kicking him out of his way. The queen however was entirely still. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. It was the same little boy who used to bring her flowers every time he visited; the same boy who used to run into her arms after falling and injuring himself; the same boy to who they entrusted their daughter. The same boy has killed her husband; the same boy is laughing about it, and the same boy will probably kill her too.
'Why?' She croaked out, throat sore from all the crying. Ember just chuckled as if this was the most hilarious situation he's ever been in. And it might be the case, the queen concluded.
'It's about time things change, don't you think?' He beamed ear to ear, excited to finally reveal his ultimate plan to someone. 'After all, it was only natural that I stepped up. Who else would be worthy enough?'
'What are you doing?' She screamed at the guards 'Restrain him!' she pointed at the man but only earned a high-pitched laugh. No one moved.
'Poor Poor Queen, can't even keep her guards in check.' He tutted, shaking his head. 'Perhaps, you've lost your touch. Isn't it kind of me to step up and run things how they should be?'
'So all you wanted was the kingdom?' She was infuriated, she was devastated and she was feeling such an unexplainable mix of emotions. She felt her stomach churn with disgust at the thought that she was going to hand her daughter to him. Then again, the Ember they knew and the man she was seeing now were like day and night.
'No, your highness.' the title left his mouth like an insult. 'I'm aiming for the whole Lupus.' He turned his back to the couple, patting the shoulders of one of the guards.
'Kill her and throw her down the river. Make it look like a work of rebels.' He ordered, walking off towards the door.
'Pearl would never let you take the throne when she comes to know.' The queen shouted at him earning a sly chuckle.
'How would she know, mother-in-law?'
__________
'To his bad luck, know. I know it very well.' Pearl lifted her head, eyes meeting with Seonghwa who sat there stunned. 'I didn't want to leave without my family. Father, mother and him.' She wiped the tears off her face. 'I stayed back along with Wooyoung; saw and heard everything.' Seonghwa didn't know what to say, how to react, how to comfort the three who had lost their everything in mere seconds to someone they trusted more than their own shadow. He wasn't sure if he should even try to comfort them. 'Had it not been Wooyoung I would've walked in there and killed him or got killed.' Pearl looked at her friend, grateful. 'He dragged me out of there and then to the village.'
'The- The Queen?' the spy finally managed to form a thought.
'Luckily she survived. We looked for her first thing after getting out of there.' Wooyoung answered. 'She was livid once she gained consciousness.' Mingi recalled. 'She is the reason why you're here now.' Seonghwa learnt that within days of her full recovery, which took about two years, she set out to other countries to form alliances, explain the situation and think up plans. The spy couldn't help but admire and respect the woman. Had it been him, he would've given up and resorted to living a peaceful life on the outskirts of the country.
'Mother informed me of the spies coming from Nashira. We had planned to meet up with you all later along. I was surprised to have found one right outside my house though.' Pearl pointed at Seonghwa, chuckling at the memory of the redhead's hurt and confused face back from that night.
Seonghwa shook his head at the memory too. It was going to haunt him forever. That stupid expensive underwear and that stupid window. If anyone from his team ever got to know this, he would not see the end of the teasing. His partner most certainly would never shut up about it. Knowing him, he'll take every opportunity to remind Seonghwa of the incident. The spy sent a silent prayer to the heavens to never let his comrade find out what actually happened that night.
'So, do you still want us not to come, pretty?' Pearl brought him out of the little spiral of thoughts. 'Would you not give me a chance to get back what was stolen from me? Would you not let me give my people the life they deserve?' She took his hand in her smaller ones, holding them tightly as if begging him to understand, to give her a chance to avenge her father, her people.
Seonghwa sighed, checking the time and swinging his bag on one of his shoulders. 'Well if that's the case, you're going to follow me even if I say no.' The trio grinned sheepishly, it was as if the spy had read their minds. 'Let's go kick some royal butt.'
Anyways how was ittt??
This was so cringe wtf. I suck at writing angst lmao You could tell I don't like it.
