The next morning I woke with a blinding headache. I was one hundred percent feeling sorry for myself. I laid staring at the ceiling until I heard a soft knock at the door and Alvarez's wife call out.
"Freya, theres breakfast in the kitchen, come eat with us."
It was the last thing I wanted right now, and I closed my eyes momentarily wondering if it was possible for me to just slip out unnoticed. I couldn't do that though, they had been kind to me when I needed it most.
"Ok, I croaked back instead. "I'll just be a minute."
I heard her footsteps retreat and pulled myself up in the bed, my head feeling too heavy for my neck. I managed to make it to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash. Then pulled on a clean set of clothes and left the room in search of the kitchen.
I found them sitting around the table, I entered the room and Alvarez looked up.
"You feel ok? He asked.
"I might have overdone the Whiskey last night." I replied.
"Come." Alvarez's wife broke in. "Sit and eat you will feel better."
I sat at the table and looked at their daughter who was sitting quietly eating her breakfast.
"Hi." I said to her with a smile.
Her head shot up from her plate and she grinned looking back at me.
"Hi." she said. "I'm Tessa, can you see how long my hair is?"
"Wooooow." I replied to her wide eyed. "I can, you know I think very soon it might even be longer than Rapunzel's hair."
She giggled and a plate was placed in front of me. I continued chatting away to Tessa as we ate. When she had finished Alvarez's wife took her off to another room.
"You can't sell the car." Alvarez spoke when we were alone.
I looked at him and he continued.
"If somebody in Oakland buys it, and it is seen, it could lead back here, questiones would be asked, it's better if the vehicle is scrapped, no trace. I'll help you find another car.........or, you can take a job with me, a mutually beneficial partnership, it would pay well."
"A job." I raised an eyebrow at him. "What kind of job?"
"I made some discreet calls. Don't panic." He said seeing the look on my face. "No one knows your here, but I did learn something interesting."
"Oh yeah, what's that then?" I asked. My heart rate speeding up slightly.
"I was told by an associate that it was you who killed the three Nazi's in Charming." He said conversationally.
I licked my lips.
"That is interesting, not many people know that information."
He gave me a wry smile. "Information is their job."
"So what job do you want me to do?" I inquired.
"I'd like to see what you can do, I know you favour knives but your obviously just as good with a gun. No evidence left behind, no witnesses. A clean operation. I could use that." He said while he finished his food and set down his fork.
"And how would you go about seeing what I can do?" My interest piqued.
I was not expecting this, I would be lying if I said this conversation wasn't making me slightly nervous but at the same time it seemed like the universe was throwing me a bone. I had nowhere to go, no plan and here was this man offering me a direction, an opportunity. Granted it wasn't the kind of opportunity I was expecting, he hadn't said it, but going by how this conversation was going I had a feeling what type of job it was going to be. This man wanted to pay me to kill people.
He pushed his empty plate away from him before answering.
"I have a place, not too far from here, quiet. I'd like to see you throw, shoot, any other skills you have that may save your life if you were to be in a situation that required that."
"You want me to go to a secluded spot in the desert with you?" I said to him making sure I had that right.
"If I was going to kill you Conejita, you would already be dead." He stated matter of factly.
"And no one will no I work for you?" I confirmed.
She shook his head. "Anonymity protects us both. IF, after I have seen your work, we are both agreed to this partnership, no one will ever meet you, all contracts will come through me."
"I have a condition." I said.
Alvarez nodded at me to go ahead.
"I want a say in which contracts I take."
"That's a fair ask. Ok." He agreed. "Let's go."
Alvarez sent me back to the room to collect my things. He would have someone come and collect the car to dispose of it so I should make sure there was nothing left behind that I might want.
We climbed in to an old beat up van and made our way towards the destination Alvarez had in mind.It had occurred to me more than once since getting in the van that I could possibly end up dead. He had said if he wanted me dead I already would be, but I didn't know him, I had no idea what his word meant. No real understanding of his business dealings with SAMCRO. so I took a chance, it wouldn't be the first time I had danced with death and it certainly wouldn't be last.
We travelled mostly in silence and I let my mind wander while I stared out the window. I thought of my Uncle and wondered if he was mad at me. I hoped not, but I also knew that was a lot to hope for. I would be furious, so I couldn't blame him if he was. I just hoped he knew that I loved him and I was sorry for just leaving without a word.
My thoughts slid to Happy even though I desperately tried to steer them away. I saw him in my minds eye and my heart ached. I hope is he mad, I hope he's furious and most of all I hope he fucking hurts! He would probably cope with it the same way he coped with any other emotion though....Sex. And then came the full circle of my own emotions as again I ended up feeling the heartbreak.
