I woke to the sound of birds singing in the trees and the sun bright outside the window. I could also hear the mumbling sound of conversation coming from the next room. Sitting up, I fluffed my flat sleep hair and slowly got out of the bed. As I approached the door I could hear my Uncle's accent filtering through.
I stood in the doorway waiting. Not wanting to interrupt their conversation, but Chibs glanced up noticing me. Happy's eyes followed his and he stood up, immediately coming to stand in front of me, placing a hand at my waist.
"I didn't want to wake you." He said quietly. "Do you want tea?"
I smiled and nodded, feeling uneasy about my Uncle's presence.
Happy moved off to the kitchen as I slowly approached the seating area with my arms wrapped around my body. Taking a seat in one of the empty chairs I drew my legs up and tucked them into myself.
"How are ye feeling?" My Uncle probed.
I shrugged. "Shit."
Happy returned with my tea and placed it in my hands.
"Ta." I thanked him.
"Soo, is thus back on then." Chibs asked looking between Happy and I.
We looked at each other not saying anything. Neither of us wanting to confirm or deny whatever was going on between us.
"We're." I started but was swiftly cut off by Happy.
"I love her."
"Are ye sure this is a good idea." Chibs aimed his question at me.
"I don't know ." I responded. "But I don't need a lecture on it."
Chibs huffed and shook his head.
"And who's gonna pick up tha pieces when it all goes tits up this time?"
A small smile graced my lips for a second.
"Weel, it wasnae yoo last time, so I dinnae no why you'd think it wuid be yoo this time.""Ooh. That's right, you'd just go crawling back to Alvarez." He sneered.
I crashed my cup down on the table, smashing it in the process and sending tea everywhere. The hot liquid splashing on to my hand and stinging.
"Marcus, will steel be very much a part o my life, with or without Happy. I dinnae need your blessing. I'm no a child."
"Child or no, when I talk. Yoo will listen!" He shouted.
Happy watched my face, waiting for a sign that he should intervene.
"You sound just like him." I taunted Chibs as I stood.
"Who?" He demanded.
"Your brother." I sneered. "I get it, I know why you're angry, but I'm just a wean begot by god knows who. So yoo no hav te concern yourself with me. I'm no your kin, I'm no a Telford."
"Aye, you are." He stated loudly.
"I am not." I flung back as I breezed past him in the direction of the bedroom.
"Your my bairn Freya." He exploded.
I spun around to face him again, unsure if I heard correctly.
"Your mine." He reaffirmed calmer. "We can tek a test if thas wha yoo want. But I no et."
I looked to Happy to see what his reaction was.
He looked back at me bewildered.I shook my head.
"You don't have to do that." My Scottish intonation gone and gutter London coming to the fore. "You ain't gotta claim me like some lost sheep."
"It's the troof." He said.
"So, what, you had an affair with my mum?" I asked disbelievingly.
Chibs tilted his head.
"Dinnae mek it sound like tha, your mum was a good woman. It wer just the one time. Yesterday in the van. I wasnae mad at ye darling, I wer shocked. It dawned on me and I wer putting the pieces together. I'm heart sorry if ye thought I cuid be angry at ye for putting tha animal doon."
He stepped forward.
"I need to take a shower." I said quickly and left the room for the sanctuary of the bathroom. I turned on the water and sat on the closed toilet seat. I felt like I had entered the twilight zone. This was some Jeremy Kyle shit.
My Dad killed my Mum and tried to kill me. So I killed him. But then I found out my Uncle was actually my Dad!I got in and stood under the water staring at my feet and wondered if my Grandparents knew, did my Mum know?
I sank down to sit while staring blankly out at the rest of the room, trying to figure out how I felt.
There was a knock at the door and I heard Chibs on the other side.
"Sweetheart, I've got to go."
"Ok" I replied flatly.
I stood and finished showering before wrapping myself in a towel and leaving the room. Happy was sitting on the arm of the sofa waiting for me as I came out. I smiled weakly and crossed the room to him.
"So, I met your Dad" he quipped "I think he likes me."
I couldn't help but chuckle.
"Oh yeah, did he give you his blessing to have your wicked way with his daughter?"
"Not exactly. He smiled.
"Oh, well, I couldn't possibly go against my fathers wishes. So I guess it's back to the ivory tower for me, until some prince on a white horse comes to save me."
I made to turn away but he grabbed me and pulled me between his legs, leaning forward to place a kiss beside my ear before whispering.
"I'd kill the prince and his fucking horse, your just gona have to make do with a biker on a Harley."
I laughed and it felt so good. We hadn't laughed together in years.
