Out Of The Ballpark

Chapter 11

​Tryouts went great. I ran three miles, I was the fastest, and I finished first. We did field drills, hand-eye coordination tests, running drills, accuracy tests, and hitting drills. For outfield we had to do popups, way too easy for me, and the "globetrotters" drill, also easy. Then we did the three miles, which I obviously crushed. For accuracy, we were given targets, and had to hit them in almost the middle for both hitting and throwing. I'm almost absolutely sure I made the team. After tryouts, N'Kaya and I met Skie at the soccer fields to watch the boys lacrosse practice.

"So I have great news for you!" exclaimed Skie.

"what what tell me quick!" I replied.

"so I overheard Coach Emily and Coach Leann talking about who to pick for the team.." Skie said.

"yeah yeah... Andddd?" now I was getting excited.

Then Skie said, "you're their first pick!!!"

This is the part where I screamed.

​All the guys from the team stated at us for about two minutes, wondering what happened, but I'm pretty sure Peter already knew. I just HAD to tell him, quickly. So right after practice, I ran up to him, jumped on his back, and yelled to the whole world "I MADE FIRST PICK FOR THE TEAM!!!"

"told you that you would make it. Who's smart now?" Peter said happily.

​Then I thanked him for pushing me to tryout and supporting me. After all the excitement calmed down a little, Sammy walked Ricky and N'Kaya to my house so I could be with Peter. Something was different though, but not between me and Peter, but between Skie and Daniel. They we're all giggly and smiley and flirty with each other.

"What's up with them Peter?" I asked.

"you haven't heard? They're dating now." he replied.

At this I turned and ran. I ran towards Skie and shoved her, almost knocking her over.

"what was that for!" Skie shouted.

"what a bestfriend you are! First, I have to hear from your sister right before tryouts that you aren't trying out! You never even mentioned tryouts around me! And now I hear from my boyfriend that his brother is dating my bestfriend? I tell you everything and you can't tell me something as simple as those things?" I said with a tone of hatred in my voice.

"I didn't think they were that important. I," Skie started to explain.

"Not that important! They really are! I didn't know where you were, and I was excited for us to play together. And having a new boyfriend? I told you, least you could've told me was when you got yours!" I interrupted.

"Well I never had the chance too! And you don't have to yell about it. I was going to tell you when we got to your house! Wow Dana, be excited for me not mad at me." Skie yelled back.

​Then Skie walked in the direction of her house instead of mine, and Daniel followed her.

"Tell Sammy to bring N'Kaya home and tell mom I'll be back soon." Daniel said.

All Peter did was stare at me with a blank face.
