Hi Hi! I felt like I wanted to bring back the scenes between Grian's death and the discovery of Xel with the other hermits, specifically Scar and doc, touching on the stages of Greif.
There's also Iskall's, which is shorter, and takes place a week after Xel was found.
~~~Scar looked over at Grian's dead body being held by Doc. He was gone. Everything they'd done, the love they've given to eachother, it wasn't enough. Tears built up inside him, trying to push past the aching feeling of loss before they spilled out like a water glass that had just overfilled by a drop. He dropped the floor, discarding his cane and curling over beside his lover's body.
What had happened?
"I'm so sorry..." Doc came and sat beside him, hugging the scarred man as best he could, giving him his cane. Scar hesitantly accepted the hug, squeezing Doc and getting his lab coat wet with tears.
"He-he's gone, Doc. He's gone. He should've talked to me, I could've helped..." scar muttered again and again between sobs.
"It's ok Scar...no one could've seen this." Doc seemed...uncomfortable. He loved Grian just as Scar, but being pushed into the villain role stopped him. The resentment bubbled up inside him for scar, but there was no place for that right now. Scar was his friend, and he needed to comfort his friend.
As the people around them started leaving, Doc quietly tapped Scar's shoulder.
"Hey, do you need to go home?"
Scar just shook his head.
"I just need a few more minutes, alone please."
"Ok. If you need me, just call." And doc left him. He really wished he hadn't.
"Bye Cub!" Click!
Scar put down the communicator and sighed. People were pitying him. I mean sure, Grian was gone and sure, he did have a breakdown upon seeing him, and sure, he just lost one of the most important people
in his life, but that was no excuse to pity him!
Jelly curled up in his lap. He needed to get out of here, do something to take his mind off of everything. Scar grazed the room before settling on his Pickaxe. Yes, that! A little mining wouldn't hurt.The soothing rhythm of the stone being broken again and again motivated scar. He couldn't stop, not now. He was getting tired. His legs ached, his heart did too.
The beacon's light shined around him. How many pickaxes had he broken? Who knew. He just needed one...little...break...
Thud! His legs gave way. Scar was exhausted. His faces scrunched up and hot tears started falling down onto the cold stone ground. He could nothing but cry.Scar didn't remember how long he had sat there, just processing everything. Maybe hours, maybe minutes. It seemed like he had holed out most of the underground of the base. Scar couldn't move and had barely enough energy to open his communicator and contact one person. Who? Cub? No. Cub was too close for that. Half-mindedly, he picked the contact named "Dr. Goat-Man".
~~~
GoodTimesWithScar(Mayor Scarface): helpDoc's communicator buzzed. At this time of night? Was it Ren? He hoped it wasn't, Ren had spamming him with stupid pictures of cats to scare him. Groggily, he opened the wristwatch communicator. Scar? What did he need help with? Doc started to get concerned.
DocM77(Dr. Goat-Man): scar is everything ok?
DocM77(Dr. Goat-Man):scar?
DocM77(Dr. Goat-Man):SCAR ANrSWERHe quickly equipped his elytra and flew towards the jungle, stumbling over his own steps in panic. Had his friend done something to hurt himself? Not again.
During the flight, Doc had time to think. If Scar had hurt himself, how long until...no. Not again. That wouldn't happen. He had already suffered losing a friend too much recently. It constantly felt if he were bargaining with the gods.
'If I finish this thing in time he could come back.'.
'If I help this person, he could come back.'
'If I pray and beg to the gods as hard as I could, he might come back.'
It was useless, he knew, but it gave him comfort. Maybe they were punishing him, for what he had done, what he was. An abomination made by people who think they're better than the gods.
Doc landed in scar's village, only to see Jellie meowing.
"Ah!" He jumped up into the bushes on instinct. "Oh, it's just you Jellie."
He looked around to see no one. "Where's Scar?" Jellie started speeding towards a hole near an entrance to a tree house.
"In there?" Jumping down, Doc was astonished. How long had he been there, just mining away?
"Scar? SCAR? SCAAARRR?!?" He shouted for his friend. There! Near a corner, Scar was laying on the cold stone floor.
"Scar! Can you here me? SCAR!" Doc crumbled down to his friend's side. The elf was breathing, that's for sure, but he didn't seem to be in much good shape other than that. Maybe a flare up, probably from exhaustion, Doc thought. Picking him up, he shivered.
Scar seemed to spring to life, just a bit, gripping onto Doc's lab coat and crying.
"Doc?..." he was parched, and it showed in his voice.
"Hey, it's fine. I'll get you out."
Jellie had appeared out of nowhere, then started showing doc an easier way out, much closer to scar's bed.Doc gave his friend some water then tucked him into his bed, before sitting down on a nearby shulker pushed up against a wall.
"Oh Jellie, what am I gonna do?" Doc asked the cat.
Maybe...I don't know, talk to the one who dated your crush?
What? Did he- did he imagine that? Doc whipped his gaze down to Jellie.
Yeah, you heard me. Do it.
Surprisingly this is not the weirdest thing he's seen.
"I don't know... I think it's too late."
Think about it. Jellie mewed. She jumped off the ledge she was perched on, doing a cheeky wink at doc before leaving.
"What the fuck."
Doc shook away the weird feeling he got and wandered his eyes over to scar. The rhythmic up and down of his breathing chest gave him peace. Maybe things would look up from here.

Iskall punched the unmoving stone around his nether portal. He was furious. Absolutely furious. How could he just let this happen? How could he not have seen the signs?
Sighing, he looked down at his bloody knuckles. Iskall had been punching the wall so much it started to bruise, but before then he didn't seem to feel a thing until he started thinking about it.
"Oh gods. Ow." He shook his hand in some kind of hope it'll relieve the sudden stinging pain. Man, he was stupid. Iskall looked up to see the full moon right under his tree. Would he ever finish it? Maybe.
Meow! A cat? No, Jellie! She trotted towards iskall, brushing her fur up against his ankles.
"Hey Jellie!" Iskall picked the cat up and started petting her.Seeing Jellie... it calmed him down. The past week has been non-stop furiosity at himself, at the world, at everyone- if anyone- who caused his friend to die. Something about the white and grey tabby, however, it just calmed him. Weird.
"Heh, maybe you're magic." Iskall chuckled to himself, before putting her down and reaching for a health potion nearby, finally noticing Jellie's hurt ankle.
"Aw, are you hurt?" His knuckles could wait. He poured a bit of the potion over jellie's leg and the muscle and skin started wearing back together, then the fur.
The cat mewed in appreciation. It almost sounded like a human saying 'thank you!' Which was weird, but before iskall could distinguish weather it was cat or not, Jellie pricked up like there was danger nearby. She started speeding out into the jungle.
"Hey! Wait!" Iskall ran after her. If Scar had figured out that Jellie went missing he would never forgive him.
Iskall kept up with Jellie as best he could, but she was extremely fast. She finally stopped under a tree infront of the mansion and started meowing over and over again.
"What're you...oh." Iskall hadn't been here in who knows how long. Jellie continued meowing, before finally saying
"Look up!" Iskall looked up to see a- what? No. That can't be! Just to check, iskall rubbed his eyes. Was he hallucinating or something? But no. He hadn't even realized Jellie actually talked. His gaze was fixed on the person.There was a person, on the tree. Same dirty blonde hair, same short stature, same purple and red wings, same face. That was Grian. But no, he had changed. He was transparent, grey, and wore a green sweater? Tunic? It was hard to see in the dark. Almost like a ghost.
"Grian?..." He almost breathed out.
"Why does everyone call me that!" Grian(?) pondered. He flew down from the branch and noticed iskall, holding his hand out to shake.
"Hello! I'm not Grian, but I'm Xel! What's your name?"
Iskall just stood there, breathless. No way.
"Iskall," He managed to muster out. "How do you- how don't you know me?"
"I think I did, but I'm just his ghost." Xel smiled. His ghost? How?
"Huh."
Xel looked around before snickering. "Don't tell Mumbo I'm here, he still thinks i'm asleep."
"Mumbo knows?" How could he not have told Iskall? A bit of rage bubbles up inside him. What a prick, he never thought that this was important enough to talk about, not even the fact he was holed up in his base for months? "Where is he?"
"Uhm, back at his base, but why-" Xel reached his hand back out, but iskall batted it away
"I'm just gonna have a talk with him."
