As Lana delicately prodded at the remnants of her meal, Beth occupied the seat opposite her at the table. The exchange of warm smiles remained as Lana resumed eating the food before her. The monotony of the prison menu, consisting mainly of pork and rice or plain pasta, elicited a playful giggle from Lana as she expressed her anticipation for a potential change.

"I've heard Rick's planning a run today, so fingers crossed we get a break from the pork," Lana remarked between bites, her amusement evident in her voice.

"I'm with you on that. Another round of this, and I might just keel over," Beth groaned in response to Lana's playful remark. Meanwhile, Patrick and Carl, joining them at the table, contributed to the conversation.

"I don't mind eating this, it's way better than having to eat dog food," Patrick commented as he sat next to the older girl, muffling a cough into his napkin.

Positioned beside Beth, Patrick embraced a generous serving of rice and shredded pork, enthusiastically indulging in his meal. In contrast, Carl opted for a more modest granola bar, settling onto the bench adjacent to Lana. As Lana observed Carl, a change in his usual demeanour caught her attention. Uncharacteristically calm, he refrained from engaging in conflicts with Lana or directing outbursts towards Patrick. Lana's gaze lingered on him, intrigued by the nuances of Carl's behaviour during this relatively tranquil moment.
