Maudie POV

Ezra and I have been getting teased about having romantic feelings for each other for the past few weeks.

The whole class thinks that we should get together since, according to them, we're' soulmates' or 'a match made in heaven.'

Which I find both ridiculous and amusing.

Even though I actually do have a bit of an interest in Ezra, I find it most unlikely that we'll be an item any time soon.

We're just not really interested in romance at the moment, and we have our focuses on something else.

Whether or not Ezra reciprocates the feelings back, I'm not sure.

However, analyzing our interactions, him liking me back is very much possible.

He has been asking me to spend more time with him outside of work and school.

Also, we're seatmates in every class, which is always a fun time.

"Maudie, I got my paper. Are you ready?"

I nodded and picked up my test paper from my desk.

"In 3, 2...." Ezra counted, slowly turning his paper and teasing his grades.

"1." We said in unison, revealing our marks.

I darted my eyes right at the corner of Ezra's test paper where the score should be labeled, and he got a 96%.

Once he laid his eyes on mine, he tossed his head back in frustration.

"1%." He muttered, "I'm down by 1%; I should have studied harder."

I leaned in and grabbed his shoulder using my right hand, trying to comfort him a little.

"Don't be too rough on yourself; the difference is pretty miniscule." I replied.

Ezra brought his head down to look at me, which was a mistake because it caused our faces to be inches apart since I was too close.

Before I could pull back, a strong force pushed me from the back, which caused me to lean forward.

In the process of doing so, I had no time to react, and the force was so great that I couldn't retreat back.

Fortunately, Ezra still had the ability to somehow react to my incoming invasion of his personal space by turning his head to the side so my face would end up landing on his left cheek.

Which is exactly what happened: my face collided with the left side of his face, with my left-hand landing on his chest.

"Kyle!" Ezra yelled.

I immediately sat up and turned around to see Kyle with a sheepish grin on his face, his hands up to his chest level in protest.

"Sorry Maudie, sorry Ezra."

Ezra rolled his eyes and looked down, his face red in embarrassment.

To make it worse, half the class saw everything and started teasing us in sing-song.

"Maudie and Ezra sitting on a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!"

The loudest one was Ava, who was happily singing along.

Then the class started teasing us once again with remarks like:

"Just get together already!"

"Maudie kissed Ezra! It's meant to be!"

"I knew it! You two like each other!"

At this point, I was used to it.

"That's enough class!" Miss Tan yelled, saving Ezra and me from further humiliation. "I'm going to show the answers on the projector; check your paper for marking errors."

Our classmates got serious and turned back to their test papers, checking for marking errors.

"Real mature..." Ezra muttered underneath his breath.

At this point, I was used to it.

Still, I could feel my heartbeat going up since I kissed Ezra on the cheek earlier.

I wanted to comfort him, but I feel like that would add more fuel to the fire and increase the teasing.

So instead, I grabbed my backpack and fished out something that I was planning to give him later that day in the office.

I tugged Ezra's shirt sleeve to get his attention, and when he acknowledged it, I slid a puzzle box towards him.

I knew how much Ezra loved solving puzzles, so when my dad and I went to the Duetsches Museum in Germany, I immediately thought of him and decided to buy it for him as a souvenir.

His eyes lit up once he saw it.

"Remember my trip to Germany with my dad last week? Well, I went to the Duetsches Museum and found these puzzle boxes for sale, and I immediately thought of you, so I bought it for you as a souvenir." I smiled as he picked it up and took a closer look at it.

"Thank you so much." He grinned, "I'm happy that you were thinking of me during your vacation."

"I always think of you... and other important things, but primarily you." I replied as I inched closer.

Ezra stopped looking at the puzzle box and focused his pupils on my face, particularly my eyes. My smile grew wider as we stared at each other for a long while.

"Did you think of me during the holidays?" I whispered.

Ezra nodded, still maintaining our eye contact.

"All the time."

My heart fluttered and my palms started sweating. "I'm really glad you did."

"Even until now." Ezra smiled, "Let me treat you to some frozen yogurt later, as a thank you for the puzzle box."

"I would love that."
