Tyrion is walking along the cliffs around Dragonstone when he sees Valen standing alone, looking out into the ocean. Tyrion walks over to his niece, "I came out here to brood over my failure to predict the Greyjoy attack. You're making it difficult. You look a lot better brooding than I do. You make me feel like I'm failing at brooding over failing," he pointed out.
"I'm a prisoner on this island while my pregnant wife is miles away with enemies all around her," Valen said sorrowfully.
"I wouldn't say you're a prisoner on this island. You're free to walk the castle, the beaches, to go wherever you want," Tyrion explained.
"But to my wife, because they took my ship," Valen said, then sighed. "The dead are coming for us all," she whispered.
"Why don't you figure out what to do about my missing fleet and murdered allies, and I'll figure out what to do about your walking dead men," Tyrion offered.
Valen looks at her uncle, "How do I convince people that an enemy they don't believe in is coming to kill them all?" she asked. At that moment, Tyrion saw fear and doubt in his niece's eyes for the first time in her life. Valen had always been confident in her abilities and never backed down from a challenge.
Seeing her so lost saddened Tyrion, "People's minds aren't made for problems that large. White Walkers, the Night King, Army of the Dead, it's almost a relief to confront a familiar monster like your mother," he explained.
"Sansa needs to help prepare her people for what's coming. I can't help her from here. I'd like to leave," Valen said.
Tyrion looks at her in surprise, "It's not like you to give up this easily," he said.
"Growing up, everyone told me to learn from my father's mistakes, and yet here I am, and my choices will be the downfall of a kingdom just like him," Valen admitted.
"Children are not their fathers, luckily for all of us. Daenerys could have sailed for Westeros long ago, but she didn't. Instead, she stayed where she was and saved many people from horrible fates, some of whom are on this island with us right now. While you're our guest here, you might consider asking them what they think of the Mad King's daughter. She protects people from monsters, just as you do. That's why she came here. And she's not about to head north to fight an enemy she's never seen on a word of someone she doesn't know after a single meeting. That's not a reasonable thing to ask," Tyrion explained.
Valen thinks for a moment, "I believe I have something reasonable to ask if you will help?" she asked.
Later in the war room, Daenerys and Tyrion are having a discussion. "Dragonglass?" she asked.
"Yes. Volcanic glass, obsidian. She says you have a tremendous amount of it here," Tyrion explained.
"Why are we talking about glass? We just lost two of our allies," Daenerys pointed out.
"Which is why I was speaking to my niece, a potential ally," Tyrion said.
"And what does the queen in the North want with Dragonglass?" Daenerys asked.
