Chapter 25: Not Just Another Day

My heart is pounding as I stand there frozen. I'm unsure of what to think. I snap back into reality when I hear Lizzie yell out "Well Mel!? What's the verdict?!"

I walk out of the bathroom and my completely pale face gave her the answer she was looking for. She just deadpan stares at me before her eyes fall and she says sympathetically "Oh, Mel.."

I just stand there unable to form words. I'm in so much shock, we were careful, we never weren't careful, I'm on birth control, how could this happen?!

"Mel? Are you okay?"

I look at her "H-how did this h-happen?! I'm on birth control!! Oh my god! And with Jake?! Lizzie! What the hell do I do?! I can't tell Jake this!! Oh no, and fuck prom my date, what do I do?!"

She looks at me and shakes her head "I'm afraid I don't have an answer for this one girl."

"Oh my god, just no..."

"Mel, make an appointment, get a for sure, maybe..." She says giving herself a chance to calm herself "maybe... It's a false positive."

"Liz, you went to health too, you know those are rare."

"Yes, I know Mel, but you could be a rare case."

I start laughing to break the tension "Yes, Lizzie you're right. I'm one of those rare students who fucks a teacher, gets pregnant, and gets a FALSE positive. Totally my luck."

She sighs annoyed "You know as well as I do it could be, you won't know until you try. You should probably also talk to Jake."

"Talk to Jake?! Are you CRAZY!? I CAN'T TELL HIM THIS!"

"Mel, soon you're going to have to."

"You think I'm not PAINFULLY aware of that?!" I snap back at her.

She huffs "Mel, look, I get you're scared, I get that you're worried and don't know what to do, but don't be a bitch to me because of it."

I stop and think for a minute. I'm still in shock, I am scared, I have a whole person growing inside of me. I have to tell Jake I'm pregnant, though I don't know how I'm going to do that without totally freaking him out and I don't want him to lose his job over this because if I'm pregnant I'm screwed.

I sigh and take a deep breath "Okay, so first things first, I'll call the doctor and get a doctor's opinion."

"You might wanna find out before Saturday, so if you are you don't drink." Lizzie chimes in.

"Right, right, of course." I stand there frozen in thought.

"Mel..?"

My eyes snap back to hers "Huh?"

"We should.. Probably go. Ya know? School?"

I breathe out as I remember "Fuck."

"If we leave now we'll make it back by lunch." She says.

The last thing I can think about right now is food. "Yeah, okay, I just don't know if I can do school."

Liz sighs "Mel, I don't even wanna go back, but I have to whether you do or not. My car is there."

I stand there knowing she's right. Whether I choose to finish the school day is up to me, but she has to get her car. "Okay, let's go." At least I won't have to sit in Jake's class.

We pull back into the parking lot and Liz looks over at me. "You coming?"

I sit there unsure "I don't know." Is all I can manage to say.

"Well I'm going to go sign in I guess I'll see you in class if you decide to come in."

I nod "Yeah." I turn and give her a small smile. She smiles back and get out of my car and heads into the building. While I sit in the car and decide if I want to go in. At least if I do I won't miss a full day. So I decide to go in and face the rest of the school day.

No sooner than I sign in with the office I'm in the cafeteria with Lizzie, Cody, and Miles, I take my usual spot next to Lizzie, after I do Cody comes and sits right beside me. He kisses my cheek and says "So where were you ladies this morning?" Cody asks.

Lizzie clears her throat "We were just running a little late is all."

Cody eyes her "Really? Cause I saw Mel here pull in and a few minutes later pulled out with you in her car, you wanna try answering my question a different way?" Liz looks at him dumbfounded.

I gulp. "I just wanted to talk to my friend Cody, I'm going through a hard time with my dad and didn't want the whole school to see me all emotional."

He nods understandingly and wraps his arm around my shoulder "Hey, no problem I get it. Just know you can talk to me too, yeah?"

I nod and smile and look back at Liz as relief washes over her face. Cause I totally saved her ass.

Lunch finishes out and Miles and Cody get ready to walk off to their next class, Miles gives Liz a kiss and Cody kisses me before they run off. Liz and I walk together and she says "Figured out what you're going to do?"

I sigh "Drop it Liz, not here." She nods. She and I part ways for the next class. "I'll see you later Mel." I nod and she goes in the opposite direction.

I walk towards my next class but not before Jake pulls me into his classroom, "Can I talk to you?"
