The school bell rang, Taylor gathered up her books and sailed out of her class with Bria. They walked to their lockers.
"Tay! Tay!" Someone shouted. Looking up, she saw Toria jogging to catch up to her. Her sleek black hair swung wildly in her high ponytail. As her teal colored muscle shirt and baggy gym shorts stuck out against her medium dark skin."Hey Tay!" She said as they high fived. She waved at Bria who just looked down.
"Hi Toria. Are you and Densten going to the bash tonight?""Yeah. You?"
"I don't know. Maybe. You know me, I'm not much of a party person." Toria shook her head as they arrived at Taylor's locker.
"Come on girl, it's the last one before we all go to college, get jobs, move across the state..."
"Don't guilt me like that." Taylor said as she grabbed her paper bag lunch and slammed her door. Bria grabbed her lunch too."I'm not trying to guilt you. But you know that once I move to Alaska, I'll probably never see you."
"I just don't get why you're going. I mean, did Densten really say he wanted to elope, or are you just saying that?""He wants to. He's not even going to ask his parents. I mean that would kill him if they found out he had a black girl for a girlfriend." Taylor shook her head.
"It's just wrong you know? How some people can be like that.""It's life Tay. Sometimes it doesn't like you." She muttered before going to where her cooler friends were. Taylor turned to Bria, she had her chaoclear in today, but as she talked, she signed it to
"Want to go outside?" Bria nodded her head and smiled"Yes outside good." She said in a monotone breathy voice. Together they walked outside and found an open picnic table by a pine tree that offered shade from the California sun.
"Did you tour the school yet?""No. Tomorrow. After school. I'm scared." Bria's Ipad said as a robotic woman with a british accent spoke for her.
"I wish I could go with you. But my mom wants to go shopping for college stuff."
"It's okay. Maybe video later?"
"Yeah. Let's plan on it."
"So, how is your neighbor?"
"Stone? He's good. I talked to him again!"
"Really!?" Bria asked as her eyebrows raised up and she rubbed her hands together
"Really. I forgot my key in Stevens' car, so he helped me."
"Still handsome?" Taylor giggled"Yes, still handsome."
"I forget. How old is he?"
"He's Twenty-one."
"You don't care he's three years older?""Oh heck no honey. I mean my parents are five."
"Oh yes. I did forget that."
"Eh it's okay." The girls ate their lunch while observing people and talking about them in their secret language. After lunch it was Geometry. Today they had their final test which usually took the whole hour because they played a study game where they practiced answering questions similar to ones on the test. Then they took fifteen minutes to use the bathroom, sharpen pencils and make sure calculators were working. Bria went to a different room to take her test because on top of being deaf, she also had a neurological problem that affected the part of her brain used to solve problems and process things.
