Liam ran a tired hand over his face. "I honestly think you should tell him," he muttered. My eyes widened at his admission. Tell Brett about Kaitlin? That was suicide. Liam must have noticed the surprise on my face because he leaned forward in his seat, rubbing his palms against his suit pants. "He married Olivia, right? He will understand," he tried again.

I scoffed. "Brett and understand do not belong in the same sentence," I replied, lifting the beer bottle to my lips. It had been days since we'd taken Lewis in, everything was sorted now. Paperwork and all. My undercover mission was done. I just had to figure out her....

"You really like this girl?", he asked me, his eyes searching my face for something

I look down at the space between us, my mind shifting back to her smart mouth, her intelligence. "Yeah," I admit, mind wandering to the sight of her sitting upon my desk, legs spread for me. "I do," I conclude.

"Well, if you gain some balls in the next couple of days, I'll happily assist you in telling Brett. He didn't kill me for sleeping with his sister, I doubt he will be too fussed about this whole ordeal," he said, trying to persuade me into this.

My head dipped. "He didn't kill you for sleeping with his sister because he knew Phoebe would have killed him the second after," I force a laugh.

Liam chuckled, reaching for his beer bottle on the coffee table seperating us. "True," he tilted the beer toward me before bringing it to his lips. "Listen, he isn't as bad as he used to be, trust me. You haven't been around for a while, Olivia has really rubbed off on him," he swigs his beer.

Rubbed off? That was true. "I know," is all that I can say. I didn't know. Liam was right, I hadn't been around for months. I'd been so caught up in this false reality with Kaitlin and the school. I'd forgotten most days that it wouldn't last - I'd forgotten that it didn't really matter. But it had. It had mattered.

"So you should speak to him before you tell her," Liam concludes.

I nod my head, thinking about Kaitlin. Was this all worth it? Was she worth risking my job? My mind shifts to the night I found her alone on campus, crying. How my heart broke for her. My shoulders drop with defeat. "Okay," I say.

It was in the contract that I don't step out of the line with any persons involved within the case, the undercover mission. I'd fucked that the moment she'd wrote two essays instead of one. "Now?", Liam asked.

"Now."

Brett was sat behind his desk, as he always was. The only difference was that he wasn't wearing his usual attire. He was wearing some sweatpants and a hoodie. His hair wasn't styled as it once had been, it was fluffier as if he had just woken up. His beard had grown. His eyes looked tired, human, but tired.

"Congratulations," he says, leaning back in his seat, hands clasping together atop his desk. His blue eyes were trained on me. I hadn't seen him in person for a while. He looked different. Married. "How's the baby?", his gaze shifts to my right, to where Liam stood.
