The things that kill us

The sea opens her mouth
We gaze upon her glory
Thinking we can tame the beast
But only the sound of her roar
Is enough to silence the bravest men

Up there in the clouds
A bird fearlessly stares down
At the waves that can drown
And quiet her song without a warning
Why is she still called by the water?

Wings, feathers, and hollow bone
Maybe there's a lesson she's already learned
That what feeds our own
Is the thing that will kill us
