The girl from beyond the berries

The girl from beyond the berries looks through my window
Her gaze shifting across her painting, now resting in the corner
She smiles and I wave back
Greeting the person I never knew

She invites herself into my room with a courage I never shared
There she sits down on my bed, her fingers shifting through the pages I saved
You grew, her eyes say
No, my lips laugh, you changed

I watch her read with tearful eyes
the words that weren't there in her time
I know what she's thinking, so I silently walk up to her
It doesn't get better, she whispers in my ear
Then why did I write less? I shake my head

Her blue eyes look confused as she plays with her messy hair
You're pretty, but you're ill, you're an artist, but you're still
I nod without deny, but still I dare to smile
At the girl from beyond the berries

Then I tell her about the thousand sunsets and the haunting songs
I show her what I've lost and won and how I was meant to become
The one to live through a bargain with fear
And when I look up to meet her eyes, I find regret in there

I watch her stained lips shake as her fingers find her mouth
Through the window they go, letting the inside out
Her eyes restlessly trace the white canvas, still resting in the corner
My paint will soon erase a person I could have known
