Chapter Sixteen

There were two entrances into the Sea of Monsters. One was the clashing rocks. Rocks that smashed together so fast that no ship could pass through them. The ship would be smashed right in the middle, causing it to sink in two pieces, providing a meal to the creatures that lurked in the deep.

The other was a strait in between two sea monsters. Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla hid in the rocks and would pluck ships up with her large mouths whenever they sailed too close. Charybdis was a monster who laid under the sea. A whirlpool sat above her, and three times a day, she would suck in water and debris, where nothing could escape.

They chose the second option. After consulting Leo about whether the ship could escape a whirlpool, and a pretty confident yes, they decided to wait until Charybdis did her sucking water routine, and then sail closer to her. She would only be a normal, if not just really big, whirlpool.

Which is how they found themselves anchored out, a mile from the mouth of Charybdis. Percy stood at the crow's nest, a spyglass held up to his eye, watching the mouth. He was waiting.

Zoë stood next to him. She had her eyes out to sea, watching as well. "So, Charybdis can only do it three times a day? Why?"

Percy shrugged. He turned to her. "My guess? Charybdis is a living thing. And like all living things, it needs energy to do things. Whenever it sucks in the sea, it takes a lot of energy. So it has to wait until it has enough energy to do it again. So if we wait until it sucks in the sea, and go right after it does, it shouldn't be able to suck in the sea as we pass by. And thus, we'll be fine, and safely inside the Sea of Monsters."

     Zoë nodded. "Okay. I see."

Percy nodded. His eyes locked onto hers, and he quickly looked away, turning back to the sea, holding his spyglass back up.

The sea continued as normal. The whirlpool above Charybdis continued moving, water falling in. In all honesty, for a mythical monster, the whirlpool wasn't that big. It would be a danger to small boats, but for a ship the size of the Argo II? It wouldn't do much.

Suddenly, the sea level lessened by an entire meter. The Argo II lurched forward, but the anchor dug into the sea floor, preventing the ship from moving far. Percy gripped the rail of the crow's nest tightly as his body slammed against the wooden wall that surrounded the platform. Zoë did the same.
