The common room was so warm. As Hogwarts was well in the midst of the autumn months, the weather had turned cold and the chill of the air had become consistent. The fall season had also brought a train of rainstorms that didn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. The skies were painted gray, not a hint or ray of sunshine to be seen to the human eye. The icy rain had only brought a further frost to the outside world, prompting even the most cold-blooded creatures to retreat indoors.
With this, the fireplaces around the school were constantly set ablaze with a well-tended fire. This was no exception for the common rooms, since students spent most of their free time in those areas. The fireplace across the room crackled and popped as the flames burned on. The sound of the fire mixed with the sound of the rain against the roof of the castle created the most perfect white noise. If you hadn't been so content to spend time with Harry, you might've fallen asleep right there.
Neither you nor Harry had the slightest care about protecting yourselves from the autumn storm outside. As long as the fire was going and the two of you stayed close, then the chances of you becoming too cold were slim. Nothing had been said for quite some time now. It had been a serene quiet, the kind that brought a peace of mind that some people spent their entire lives trying to experience. The silence had stilled any and all racing thoughts. It had put a pause in the anxious worries, the suffocating fears, and the stressful thinking.
Harry's fingers danced along the top of your thigh, his touch tickling at your warm skin. Harry was seated and settled into the cushions of the large armchair, his achy muscles and tired bones taking a well-needed rest after a long week of classwork and Quidditch practices. Harry had needed to take a load off for a while, even if it was just a few hours sitting in the comfort of his favorite person.
He had needed this.
"You're falling asleep, aren't you?" Harry suddenly asked, which caused you to slightly flinch at the abrupt noise.
Harry had felt your breathing change into slow inhales and slow exhales, which brought him to believe that you were close to dozing off. While you were tired, you hadn't quite reached the point of falling into a dreamful slumber.
"No. I'm awake." You replied, a soft smile appearing on your face.
Another stretch of silence. Another set of minutes that were left noiseless and completely unspeaking other than the fire and the rain. Harry's lips pressed a kiss to the crown of your head, causing your body to flush with heat. Both of your gazes were set on the window just a few feet in front of you. The pair of you watched as the water continued to fall aimlessly from the sky and beat down against the glass. The droplets slipped down and raced one another to the bottom of the windowsill, disappearing into nothingness as another set of raindrops were close to follow.
As you sat in that empty common room, you thought about the differences in the fire burning and the rain falling. It was an odd concept really, how different the two actually were, yet they were two of the most vital resources in life. How could two things that were so different bring the same amount of life and benefits into the world?
Fire provides warmth and safety, a feeling of comfort and protection from the hurtful elements of nature. Fire provides light in the depths of darkness. Rain provides water, a resource that is absolutely necessary for survival in all kinds of different ways. Water provides satisfaction and replenishment to the body to be able to thrive. Two very different parts of life that were equally just as important as the other.
And Harry Potter was a lot like fire and rain.
Your beloved boyfriend was all of those things. He was warm and safe like fire. He offered you light in the darkness and he did absolutely everything in his power to protect you. He was also satisfying and relaxing like the rain. He gave you fulfillment and rejuvenation that gave you the purpose of living.
When tears were streaming down your cheeks like raindrops on a window or when fury seethed through your veins like a fire roaring in a fireplace, Harry was the source of repose that brought you back into the state of tranquility that set you at ease.
The words that Harry spoke and the actions that he committed were never with the intent of hurting you. He only ever said and did things to show his love, care, and adoration for you. He never wanted to make you unhappy. When you were happy, he was happy too. You were his happiness that he had spent so long looking for.
"I love you," Harry purred, breaking the silence once more, "I love you so much, darling."
The beat of Harry's heart was unchanging as he said those words to you, but somehow it made him mean them even more. You craned your head to look up at him, your eyes meeting his famous ones. His eyes really were captivating. Harry had been told a million times over that he had his mother's eyes. You hated that you'd never have the chance to know Harry's parents. The very people that were the reason for the way Harry was. But you didn't dwell on it too much, because Harry already beat himself up for it.
You shimmied upwards just a little with the intention of getting closer to his face. Harry's hands held your waist a little tighter, keeping you in his lap and not allowing you to stray from him. A lazy grin appeared on his face as your lips came close to his, his breath hitching just a tad as it always did when you were about to kiss him.
"And I..." You paused to kiss him, his chuckle vibrating out of his chest and into the kiss, "Love you."
Harry kissed you again, hiding the blush that had dusted his cheeks. His nose brushed against yours as he kissed you, over and over again until he was sure that this moment wasn't in danger of being taken from him prematurely. The making out did stop after a while, but the two of you remained close in each other's space. He nuzzled the tip of his nose against yours, leaving a few chaste kisses here and there.
When you rotated to return to your previous position, the environment of the room went back to what it had been previously.
Quiet. Peaceful. Perfect.
Both of your attentions returned to the window, the unchanging weather continuing to persist in the world outside. For now, the warmth of the fire and the presence of the rain weren't stopping anytime soon.
And you were perfectly fine with that.
