Third Person's POV
The Romanos were disappointed.
Ana's refusal to stay for dinner lingered heavily in the air long after she left. They understood—at least they tried to, but it didn't make the ache in their chests any lighter. They had wanted nothing more than to spend time with her, to sit across the table and watch her eat, to hear her voice fill their home.
It wasn't the DNA test that troubled them. That truth would come soon enough.
It was the what ifs.
What if she was right?
What if she truly was just someone who resembled Vincenzo—an impossible coincidence with Romano features, the same feeling, the same presence... but not their daughter?
They hadn't even seen her eyes yet.
And yet, everything about her screamed Romano. Her mannerisms, her expressions, the way she carried herself. She felt like their baby girl.
Different thoughts occupied different minds, leaving them with no choice but to wait.
They prayed silently.
Eighteen years and ten months of grief, guilt, and unanswered questions had been enough. They wanted the pain to end. They wanted to love her openly, fiercely—to make up for all the years stolen from them.
They still remembered that day vividly.
The day the Romano family was finally blessed with a baby girl after decades.
The joy. The celebrations. The way her brothers hovered around her crib, already protective, already in love. The way Alessia had cried when she held her daughter for the first time.
And then—
The nightmare happened.
One night.
She was Gone.
Taken by her own uncle.
For what reason, they never knew.
⸻
Morning came while the anxiety still lingered as everyone sat down to have breakfast.
And then—
"Don, the doctor is here."
The words sliced through the room.
Everyone stood at once, chairs scraping softly against the floor as they made their way to the living room.
The doctor stood waiting.
Vincenzo's voice was calm, cold and authoritative as he spoke, "The results?"
The doctor handed over the envelope to Vincenzo, anxiousness evident on his face as he shuddered a little in the presence of such powerful people. "Here, Don. I'll take my leave... congratulations."
That was enough.
Vincenzo opened the envelope.
Alessia's hands trembled. "Vincenzo... please."
Her voice held desperation and hope as she waited for Vincenzo to look through the test.
Vincenzo casted a brief look over the content of the test, his eyes going over each word written on the paper carefully as he analysed the results marked on it.
He was anxious too. Anticipation lingered in his stance too but he concealed it masterfully.
"Positive," he said simply after a slight pause of looking at the test in his hands.
