Friday. Hawkins High School Gym, 6:00 pm
Once everyone was sat on the bleachers, the buzzer on the score board blared, signifying that the game was about to start. "You okay?" Mike asked Will, snapping him out of whatever he was thinking. "Uh, yeah." Will smiled. Mike nodded and turned back to the court in front of them. "Welcoming the starting Point Guard, Lucas Sinclair." The announcer broadcasted. Will noticed everyone in the student section, including Max, El, Dustin, Mike and himself, stood up and started cheering for Lucas as he ran out onto the court. As Lucas passed all his friends, Will smiled and waved. Lucas noticed this and waved back before jogging over to one end of the basketball court.
By the 3 quarter, Mike noticed something off about Will, he wasn't talking as much and any sudden noise would make him flinch. "If he's not talking or he's not talking or, like, gets overstimulated, can you get him away from it?" Mike remembered what El said and, almost without thinking, grabbed Will's hand. "Me and Will are gonna go outside for a bit." Mike said to El, who nodded and mouthed, "thank you." Mike nodded and stood up, snapping Will out of his freak out state. "What're you doing?" Will asked, tilting his head in confusion. "Taking you out of there." Mike answered, walking out of the gym. "Why?" Will questioned. "Because you were clearly over stimulated." Mike answered, stopping in the wall.
"How could you tell?" Will wondered. "Well, you weren't talking, or cheering and any noise would make you flinch." Mike explained, sitting on the floor of the hallway. "Oh." Will said, sitting down next to Mike. "Sorry. I-" Will started. "Don't you dare apologize." Mike said, taking Will's hand and turning to face him. "Look, you did nothing wrong so there's no need to apologize." Mike smiled. "Really?" Will asked. "Really." Mike replied.
"You can go back in there if you want to." Will smiled as he leaned against the wall behind him. "I think I'll stay our here with you." Mike replied, also leaning against the wall. "Don't you want to see Lucas play?" Will asked, turning his head to look at Mike. "Of course I do but, I'm not gonna leave you out here by yourself." Mike paused to reach for Will's hand again this time, lacing their fingers together. "Plus, this is just the start of the season, I promise I can come and watch him another time." Mike said, giving Will a reassuring smile. Mike couldn't help but stare at Will and his smile.
"You have a pretty smile." Mike blurted out. "Uh- Thanks Mike." Will stammered, flustered. "Your smile is prettier though." Will pointed out. "Yeah. Whatever Byers." Mike laughed and turned to hide the blush forming on his cheeks "What it is." Will said, leaning over to Mike. Once Mike turned back to Will he noticed how close they were to each other. Close enough to feel their noses brush up against each other. All Mike could do was stare in Will's eyes. And those eyes were already staring at Mike's lips.
But before either could do anything the buzzer coming from the score board in the gym went off, making both boys jump off each other. Also signifying that the game was over and people would be coming out of the gymnasium door any second. "We should find El." Will said, standing up and reaching his hand out to Mike, who was still sitting on the floor. "Yeah." Mike replied, taking his hand.
