The two boys walked quietly out of the school, unsure of how to address the awkward silence between them.
When they had passed the entrance of the school, Minho finally spoke.
"Hey, um, does that happen...often," he questioned.
Jisung stared at the concrete as they walked down the street. He hated making eye contact with people he wasn't comfortable around, and he was scared that if he said or did anything 'weird,' then Minho would leave him. Plus, he was having a meltdown after all that had happened, leaving him feeling nonverbal.
He pulled out his phone, much to Minho's confusion. He tapped furiously before clicking a button.
"No, not really, " a robotic voice said from the phone.
Minho took a second to process what the phone had said, then he asked, "Okay, then why did he do that to you today?"
Jisung would be lying if he said he wasn't shocked by Minho's reaction. Usually, when he would use text-to-speech, stim toys, or just anything that made his life easier, people would make fun of him or just ignore him completely. But Minho acted as if it was totally normal.
"What's wrong with you," the text-to-speech asked.
Minho gave Jisung a confused look.
"What do you mean?""You aren't questioning why I'm using my phone to talk. Everyone questions it. You aren't acting like everyone else."
"Why would I question you for that? If it's something that helps you, then it's no right of mine to question you, " Minho responded as he casually slipped his hands into his pockets.
He really wanted Jisung to feel comfortable around him. He knew what it was like to go nonverbal around people he couldn't trust. He honestly was impressed by Han's bravery in using text-to-speech around a stranger.
Meanwhile, Jisung was frazzled by Minho's words.
How is this guy so nice?
He had always avoided Minho because he thought that he would be an asshole, just like the other 'popular' students. But, looks can be deceiving.
"I guess you're right."
They walked the rest of the way without another word, processing the conversation they had just had. Han listened as Minho hummed softly to fill the quiet. It had a calming effect on him, so he didn't mind it.
"This one's mine, " the text-to-speech finally said. Jisung went to walk up the stairs, but Minho stopped him.
"Hey, wait," he yelled quickly.
Jisung turned around, confused by the random outburst.
"Give me your phone, " Minho requested, holding his hand out to him.
Jisung gave him a questioning look but eventually handed it over. Minho tapped around on Jisung's phone and then handed it back over to the owner, completely satisfied with what he did.
"There, " he nodded, "now you have my number. Text me if you ever need anything. And I mean anything." He raised his eyebrows and pointed at the phone for emphasis.
Jisung just nodded, his social battery completely drained from the long day. He turned and walked up to his house. Minho watched to make sure he made it safely inside and then turned in the direction of his home. As he walked, he couldn't stop thinking about Jisung, and just how shocked he was by Minho's absent-minded, kind words.
Has he never been treated like a human being?
