"Lieutenant, your face seems kinda greenish." Sasha noticed. The Lieutenant's face had slowly begun to turn paler, all the blood draining from her already pale complexion. Hearing Sasha's exclamation, Maria dragged her eyes up to see everyone looking at her with worry. Even Levi seemed to have been keeping an eye on her.
In all honesty, Maria felt like she was going to hurl, and seeing Armin empty the contents of his stomach also didn't help her case. But how could she blame him? She felt the same way now that she finally came to the realization she... killed a man.
The group had moved to the roof to hear what Mikasa and Maria had to say. The honey-blonde checked her gear for the last time, before shifting her leg in the metal casing.
"Be ready everyone, this is serious," Maria spoke, getting rid of her remaining hesitation for the moment. Not even before she could continue, Sasha perked up, a worried look plastered over her face.
"I hear shooting!"
"Huh?" Connie frowned looking back at the brunette girl. "From there!" She pointed in the direction where the shots were coming from. "I heard a bunch of shots!"
Now, Maria also turned to look at where Sasha was pointing. Regardless of how much she wished Levi was wrong, she now realized the man was right. This had never been some kind of farce - of course, Levi would never joke about something like protecting his squad. Now, all Maria hoped was that he was safe and the shots weren't meant for him.
"You think something happened?" Jean butted in. The honey-blonde could feel the teen's confusion in his voice, his brown eyes filled with worry. However, he wasn't the only one shooting worried looks.
"Most likely." Mikasa began. "The Captain gave us a message..." the teen turned to cross eyes with Maria. "From now on, we won't be just fighting titans, but humans too..." Maria finished her sentence.
"Huh? You mean...?"
Jean's voice was laced with shock, and how could she blame him? Not in a million years she would have thought she was going to fight other people when she joined the Scouts. Maria wasn't even sure how Mikasa really thought about these orders. The girl had been so hard to read. But one thing she knew for sure. She cared a great deal for Eren and wasn't going to let anyone hurt him.
"Hey!" Connie shouted as Mikasa shot off with her maneuver gear.
Her words not yet fully sinking in, Jean now turned to look at Maria, his eyes sending a pleading look for her to explain what was just announced.
"I told you this was serious," Maria began. "But how much I hate this as well, now is not the time to think things over," She shot him an apologetic look. "There's no time to spare, we have to go now!"
With that said, Maria looked down at her leg one last time before pushing herself off the roof, following Mikasa closely behind.
For the first time ever since the accident, she used her ODM again, and it would probably not be for a good cause...
Soaring between buildings, Maria shifted her eyes from left to right, trying to spot Eren, Historia, and hopefully Levi.
