The words she had said earlier still echoed in my mind.

"I never asked you to wait for me."

Even though I knew she was right, it still stung. I had no right to expect anything from her, yet some of me had hoped she would acknowledge my presence—maybe even appreciate it. But instead, she had looked at me with frustration, her eyes flashing with emotions I couldn't quite place.

The rest of the class passed in silence. Haejin kept her head down, pretending to focus on her notebook, but I could tell she wasn't paying attention. I stole a few glances at her, noticing how tense she seemed. Something was off.

By the time lunch arrived, I decided I wasn't going to let this distance between us grow any further.

But just as I was about to leave the classroom, Jimin and Namjoon stopped me.

"Hey, Jungkook," Jimin said, crossing his arms. "I saw you talking to Haejin earlier. She looked upset. Is everything okay?"

I forced a shrug. "She's just frustrated about something. It seems like she doesn't want to talk about it."

Jimin opened his mouth to say something else, but before he could finish, Haejin suddenly appeared.

"Namjoon, the principal wants us to come to her office right now," she said, her voice steady. Namjoon nodded and followed her out, leaving me standing there with Jimin, who was still watching me curiously.

Before he could ask anything further, Jisoo appeared, grabbing his arm.

"Jimin, I've been looking for you! Let's go eat. I'm starving!"

I sighed, running a hand through my hair as I watched them leave. A part of me wondered what Jimin had been about to say before Haejin interrupted. But I pushed the thought aside.

The day dragged on, and by the time I got home in the afternoon, exhaustion weighed heavily on me. As I glanced at the clock, I realized it was already 4 PM.

Usually, I would meet Haejin at the library around five, but today was Thursday—the one day she didn't go. Frustration simmered inside me at the realization that I wouldn't see her until tomorrow.

As I sat at my desk, I grabbed a pen and made a mental note to ask for her number. It was ridiculous that I hadn't done it yet.

The next morning, I arrived at school earlier than usual, waiting to catch a glimpse of Haejin. But as the minutes passed, my excitement turned into disappointment when there was no sign of her.

Then, just before class started, she finally walked in.

She was never late. If she couldn't make it, she would always take leave. But today, she looked different, walking in quietly, her expression unreadable as she took her usual seat.

"Hey," I greeted her, hoping to ease whatever was bothering her.

To my surprise, she responded with a simple "Hello." It wasn't cold, nor was it distant.

But something was still off. She had been acting differently ever since that day when she didn't show up at the library, and I needed to find out why.

By the time lunch rolled around, I decided I couldn't ignore it any longer. Before she could leave, I caught her attention.

"Haejin, can you come to the rooftop? I need to talk to you."

She hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay."

I didn't waste time. After lunch, I headed straight to the rooftop, only to find her already there, standing near the railing. Her back was to me, the breeze slightly lifting strands of her hair.

I walked up behind her and gently tapped her shoulder. She flinched before turning around, her expression neutral.

"Tell me, Jungkook, what do you want to talk about?" She said, looking tired, to say the least. There was no irritation in her voice, just quiet patience.

I hesitated before asking, "Is everything alright?"

Why am I asking her? Do I care? Maybe I do.

She tilted her head slightly, a small smile playing at her lips. "Why are you asking so suddenly?"

"Isn't it obvious? You've been acting a little... weird."

She let out a soft chuckle. "I'm not acting weird. It's just... I can't control my emotions right now."

I frowned. "Why? Is everything okay with you and your family?"

She nodded. "Everything's fine."

But I didn't believe her.

We sat there in silence for a while, neither of us saying a word. I wanted to press further, to ask her what was bothering her, but I didn't know if she would even let me in.

Eventually, we decided to head back down. But as we made our way toward the staircase, Mina suddenly appeared in front of us.

She crossed her arms, a smug smirk on her lips.

"So, Jungkook," she drawled, eyes flicking between me and Haejin, "is she your new girlfriend? Trying to break my record already?"

I clenched my jaw, already irritated by her presence. But before I could speak, she turned to Haejin, stepping closer.

"Let me tell you something," Mina whispered, loud enough for me to catch parts of it. "He's Jeon Jungkook. He never falls in love. He doesn't care about anyone's emotions." Then she whispered something to Haejin.

I saw Haejin's eyes, the light catching the unshed tears forming in them. Was she crying?

Before Mina could continue, I stepped in.

"Enough of your bullshit, Mina. Let her go and stop talking crap about me." My voice was calm, but the warning was clear. "I remember how much you used to beg for my attention."

Mina scoffed, but for once, she had nothing to say.

I turned to look at Haejin, but she was gone.

Damn it.

Where did she go?

The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, and I had no choice but to head back to class. As I entered, I spotted her sitting in her seat, head down on the desk.

Relief flooded through me. At least she was still here.

I hesitated for a moment before quietly taking the seat beside her. I reached out and gently ran my fingers through her hair, smoothing it down.

She didn't flinch.

It was as if she hadn't even noticed my touch.
