I loved the water before I loved him. I had never seen the beach, but I knew of the lake in the grove and the profound silence under the surface. But once I touched that sand, reveled at the bountiful colors of the shell he had handed me, the water was no longer silence. It was a deafening roar. A crash of impact that knocked me off my feet. Took my breath away. After him, the enjoyability of the silent lake was no longer. It now reminded me of the slight smile, the hands that always gave. The bottom of my stomach, blossoming that strange feeling I knew was wrong. Those feelings that birthed hatred inside myself, for myself.
