I arrived at home and was surprised to see that my mom wasn't there. I checked my phone and didn't see any messages from her letting me know she was going out. I sent her a quick text asking if she was ok and went to pour myself a glass of wine.

A few minutes later my phone lit up with an incoming message. I opened it up expecting to see a response from my mom but instead saw a random number.

... : checking to see if you got home safely. And before you think I'm a stalker, you called me first.

I thought for a second and it hit me...Ryan.

A: using the company phone to stalk your boss is probably frowned upon.

R: I am doing my job. I'm making sure my boss got home safely and stalking is such a strong word. I shouldn't have started off with that, now it's going to stick whenever you think of me.

A: well then it's a good thing I won't be thinking of you.

R: that hurts and you know it's not true anyways.  And BTW, technically you are not my boss. I don't fall under your umbrella as I'm way too important. Like above your pay grade important.

A:I'm intrigued. What makes you soooo important?

R: without me you can't enter or exit the building. That technically makes me your boss.

A: I can adjust my times and come when you're off. So you can't hold that over my head....next. What else you got?

R: that's it, That was my all. I yield.

A: well, I don't blame you...I'm not easy.

R: oh I know you're not, and that's why I'll keep trying.

I wasn't sure what we were talking about anymore. Or where this conversation was taking us on a shared security phone.

A: it was really great meeting you today. Thanks for checking in on me :) I'm going to settle in for the night.

R: see you tomorrow, night.

I placed my phone down and shook my head. It was unexpected, but sweet, and it got my mind off of other things. At least temporarily.

My phone lit up again. I picked it up smiling, assuming it was Ryan again, but nope.

Twice I was wrong.

M: did you get home safely? You never answered how you were getting home?

A: yes I'm home safe. I took a cab.

M: I see, starting tomorrow you'll be assigned a driver. He will pick you up at 730 and take you to the clinic. He'll exchange his info with you and you can let him know your schedule.

A:I'm fine taking a cab. I don't need a driver. I'm fine.

M: maybe your fine but there is still someone out there that hurt you, and the police haven't gotten any leads. Until then let me do this small thing.

Now he cares! Pfft.... I threw my phone down

Well, I knew I couldn't say that. He's shown me he cares in some capacity by getting me this apartment, helping my mom, getting the furniture, giving me the job.

I picked the phone back up.

He wins again.

A:ok. Thank you. I would love a driver until I'm comfortable driving my self again. Thank you Marcus.

M: you're welcome. I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight Ana.

My attention was taken off my phone by the apartment door opening. My mother walked in, grinning from ear to ear. She was humming to herself as well.

"All right mom. Spill it. Where have you been and with you" I squinted my eyes in her direction and pointed my phones flashlight at her face.

"Take that off my face now, you're being silly." Clearly not ready to give in.  I now had another side mission. Who was my mother's new friend.
