I announced myself to an older lady that was parked right outside of Marcus's office and was told to take a seat.
Secretly I was impressed and pleased that he didn't have a cliche bimbo type assistant that you see in every movie.
She was about 50, well put together and dressed impeccably. I hoped that I would look half as good as her when I got to her age.
I tried to busy myself and scrolled through the news, on my phone, in an effort to keep my nerves calm. Clearly I wasn't having any success. My leg was jittery and I couldn't stop it from bouncing up and down, which annoyed the older woman. I could hear her sigh in relief as the door behind her opened.
I glanced up expecting Marcus to come out but was greeted, instead, by a young woman who could have been a runway model. She was tall, at least 5'9, wearing high heeled pumps which made her appear even taller. She was dressed in a white blouse and a deep purple skirt that stopped just above her knees. As she walked, her perfect auburn hair swayed from side to side with an insane amount of volume. When she caught me staring, she grinned and walked over, stopping right beside my chair.
As she was about to speak I heard my name called by a sexy voice that I remembered so clearly.
"Ana....Ana" I pulled my gaze away from the woman and stood up. I caught Marcus giving her a disapproving look and she left.
I composed myself as best as I could and walked towards Marcus, side stepping him in the process, as he made no effort to move out of the way.
I was so close to him I could smell his cologne.
I took a couple of steps into his office and turned around to face him. We were both stuck for a moment, neither one moving or saying anything. As if pulling himself out of a trance, he closed the door and made his way to his desk. He gestured me to sit in one of the two chairs facing him. I chuckled internally at the choice of his guest seating. Both the chairs looked extremely uncomfortable and I guessed that was the intended purpose. Don't make anyone too comfortable or they'll overstay their welcome.
I thought back to my short stay with him. Maybe he meant to make me uncomfortable so I would never truly feel welcome.
He cleared his throat as I stood there lost in my thoughts. Snapping out of it, I took a seat and looked directly at him.
"Thanks for seeing me on such short notice, I apologize, I should have called or messaged before coming" I felt my breathing increase in pace.
"It's fine, I can't say I'm surprised at your visit. I knew Terry was going to see you today and figured it was just a matter of time before you came" he leaned back in his chair and placed his palms together. "I assume you have questions"
"That's putting it lightly. When did you decide to do this? Why are you giving me half of the clinic? What exactly do you want me to do?" I had so many questions but felt like I was rushed. It felt like any time with Marcus was always limited.
"I decided the day I came to you. When you took the other job I still went ahead with my plan. It made sense for me to follow through but wasn't sure who would take over the clinic once completed. I gave you less than half, but regardless, if you have a stake in the project you will be more likely to follow through and make sure it succeeds....and to answer your last question, you will be involved in all meetings going forward so you will figure out what needs to be done in no time." His gaze deepened and the air became thicker. I knew he took a jab at me. Maybe he thought I wouldn't catch it, but I did. I never had any issues following through with work tasks.....he knew that. He was talking about us and me leaving.
"I haven't accepted yet, so it's presumptuous for you to assume" I looked at him challengingly.
"You're here. You wouldn't be if you didn't want it" he smiled arrogantly, as if he won some kind of a game.
"You don't know me that well Marcus" I scoffed and looked away. I was angry but needed to control my emotions. I wouldn't give him anything more to gloat about.
"So it's settled then, you can meet with the project manager tomorrow and get the details. I think you briefly met Samantha in the waiting room. She will be your assistant going forward and can get you caught up on everything" he leaned forward and held my gaze.
"I am...truly...looking forward to working close with you Ana" and with that I got up and left.
