There was a pearly glow in the sky. The first rays of sunlight lit up the ward. The dawn chorus of melodic birdsong drifted in. The rising sun casted a rosy hue across the morning sky. Dazai was the first one to wake up. He yawned and stood up before walking over to Chika. He kneeled down examining her, and tried to check her pulse, making sure the she was still okay.
I gradually opened my eyes and turned my head, only to find Dazai gazing at me innocently. Dazai then realised that I was awake, opened his mouth and only said one phrase in deep concern, "are you okay?" but his eyes told me that there were at least a million questions in his head who he failed to interrogate. I was about to speak, but no words came out, due to the dryness of my mouth and throat. Dazai looked at me for another few moments with unease, before moving to grab something from the bedside table.
"Here, I brought some water. Drink it slowly." Dazai insured; and handed me the glass of water.
I drank it with eagerness before saying a small 'thank you'. I couldn't even remember the last someone's been this caring for me...
"Stay here for a bit, don't move, otherwise the wound will reopen. I'll go inform the doctor about this, and get you discharged so Yosano can treat you with her ability." He explained, and then walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
I've seen the name Yosano before, somewhere, it was on the information documents of the Armed Detective Agency. Akiko Yosano, the personal physician of the Agency, who have the ability to heal one instantly, but under the circumstance of that person being at the rinks of death. She had been a student surgeon under the care of Ougai Mori, the leader of Port Mafia. The poor girl worked at the front line restraining the lives of soldiers continuously until only their souls were left behind. How pathetic.
After some time, Dazai finished discussing with the doctor and phone called Yosano, informing her about the situation which she happily agreed to help. Then I was discharged, and the ambulance took us back. It felt all too smooth and simple, there must be more to this.
As I leapt out of the vehicle, and saw a four-level building, with ceramic bricks and windows that nearly outskirts the whole infrastructure. Dazai placed my arm across his shoulders and held it in place with one hand, "you can't fall", he said, then helped me up the stairs until we reached a door with the sign 'Armed Detective Agency' on it.
"Are you ready to go in?" Dazai asked.
"Most certainly not." I replied honestly.
"Well, you don't have a choice anyways." He says in a gentle and comforting way.
However, before we made any further consumptions, a lady with straight, dark hair bob cut having a golden butterfly pin attached on it opened the door. She must be Yosano. Her magenta eyes were gorgeous.
"Oh, hello there Yosano, she's the girl I was talking about." Dazai looked at me, smiling.
"Hello Yosano-san. I'm Chika Haruno."
"Erk, what in the world took you so long Dazai? The rest of the agency is out, so there's only me." She then looked at me, and made a friendly grin. "Hello there Chika-chan, please come in now, you need treatment."
Yosano guarded me to the medical room, but it rather looked like a room for torture, with all different tools for dead corpses and even belts tied to the bed.
"Please don't mind this, you're definitely not be going in here, Dazai will probably kill me."
Then she walked further ahead, to another door, where it was a normal treatment room. I laid down, and got injected, then fell into anaesthetization.
-----
I opened my eyes, and gazed out the window, the slanting rays of the setting sun gave a warm orange tinge to the sky. I could hear the rustling city, probably people returning home from work or school. I don't know how many hours had already passed, but it was long for sure. Footsteps emerged into the silence, only to find the door knock being twisted, I was scared, but only to find a lady in an employee uniform behind it.
"Oh! You're awake, I got your clothes, change them and come out when you are ready." She smiled sweetly, before leaving my school uniform on the chair nearby and walked out. Such an angelic person, just so righteous. I got out of the restrain and saw no wound appearing on my upper body anymore, then I changed clothes, folding the hospital gowns neatly, before placing them on the same chair. I stepped out, seeing Dazai sitting on the same couch where I first met him, but this time, there was another person, a white-silver-haired man, in his 40s maybe.
"So, you are Chika Haruno? I'm the president, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and I've heard the request from Dazai, about you wanting to join the armed detective agency. What do you have to say?" He urged with an aggressive tone with his hands tugged in for both sleeves.
Yukichi Fukuzawa, the man that can control his worker's ability. "I want to be employed, so there can be a roof over my head and food in my mouth. I will take the examination if needed."
"Your request can be easily granted. And you sure know a lot...even about the examination..." When he said that, I panicked, trying to not express my nervousness.
"There's no examination needed though, the security camera footages had already proven that you are well suited for this job, even putting citizen's life before your own and surprisingly fine combat skills. However, I've got one important question for you. Are you an ability user?"
My eyes widen, appalled by the question. Of course, they've seen the conversation I had between Akutagawa. I must smooth things over. "Of course I'm not, the Port Mafia have got it wrong. Documents can be mixed up sometimes."
"...as you wish." He clearly didn't believe what I said, since it's just such a vague excuse. "Dazai!" When the president called out his name, the man leaning on the couch stood up instantly.
"Yes?"
"I'll leave Chika-san under your care. Introduce her around, to her future co-workers and job. However, there's no dorm available after Atsushi came..." he then looked at me. "So, Chika will live with you, in the extra room of your dorm."
"I will surely take care of Chika-chan, there's no need to worry." Dazai replieed with a graceful yet respectful bow, one hand behind his back, and one in front. The man with wrinkles under his eyes then walked out. Now, there's only me and Dazai in the room.
Rising up from the bow, Dazai then inspected at me with a cold demeanour expression and spoke in the same tone, "not an ability user? Such an inferior excuse, but say what you like, I have no right to your personal doings." He then approached me, until we are only inches away. One of his hands held my wrist, it was piercing cold, and then used the other to push up my sleeves harshly, yet not causing any pain, revealing several scars from cuts and burns "any says for these?"
(Since I don't have much says for this, here's a Dazai quote!
"If You Place Yourself Somewhere Close To Raw Emotions Where You're Exposed To Violence And Death, You Can Brush Against Man's True Nature. I Thought I Could Find A Reason To Live Somehow." - Dazai Osamu
Oh yes, and I'm reading Dazai's novel 'No Longer Human' at the moment. It's an masterpeice, it explores the detached and alienated feeling from society, and about humanity that's just unatural and complicated to understand, which in the protagonist's case, is impossible to comprehend. Have a read of it! ✧( •̀ ω •́ )✧)
