"See you all tomorrow, class! Okuda, can you still stay to work on that poison, or do you need to get home?" Koro-sensei asked Okuda as the rest of the class started collecting their assignments and bags. Okuda nodded her head happily, "Yes sensei! I can't wait to start!" Vivian filled her school bag and started towards the door. "Bye Vivian!" "See you tomorrow!" shouted Rio, Yukiko, and Kaede as they saw her leaving. Vivian looked back and waved goodbye, not stopping to chat as she made her way out the school entrance, scenting the air as she made her way down the steps with her head down, counting the steps in her head as she went. She barely made it to three before she stopped. The calming scents that were drifting towards her could only belong to two people. Lifting her head, she looked at the bottom of the steps, and standing there were the exact two people she was expecting to see, watching her as if they had been waiting for her to get there. She didn't make a move to get closer. Instead, she asked, "What are you two doing?" Nagisa and Karma gave each other a look out of the corner of their eyes before Nagisa spoke, "We wanted to walk you to where you're picked up. Is that ok?" Karma nodded in agreement with Nagisa, "Yep, we're walking with you." Karma didn't give her a chance to agree or refuse, as he turned around and started walking down the mountain. Nagisa looked back at Vivian with a shy smile, "Sorry, he didn't really give you a choice, did he? I can tell him no if you don't want to walk with us." Vivian opened her mouth to tell them to do whatever they wanted, but before she could, Karma spoke up, "Are you two coming or what?" Nagisa still waited beside her for her response, but all she did was shrug and start making her way to where Karma was waiting about ten feet away. Nagisa jogged to catch up with her. The three of them walked together with Vivian walking between them both, Karma on her right and Nagisa on her left. Again, Vivian couldn't help but take a deep breathe, their combined presence and scents causing her whole body to loosen up when she was always tense, always ready for an unexpected strike to come from anywhere, but for some reason whenever the two of them were near her brain was silent. No memories of her past creeping into her mind, not even when she was standing between them, a spot that if she was anywhere else, between anyone else, she would have immediately went into defense mode, striking out to protect herself with barely a thought. The girl behind the wall was dancing around in excitement, so happy to be near them, but the only thing that reached Vivian was her heartbeat was erratic and her head ached. Being near one of them still caused a slight ache, but with both of them here, her head was in agony, not that she showed it on her face, her training impeccable. She was so focused on not showing the pain in her head, she hadn't realized Nagisa and Karma had been trying to get her attention until Karma wrapped his left arm around her waist and dragged her under his shoulder. "You ok, Vivian? Nagisa and I have been trying to ask you a question, and you haven't said anything. Are we bothering you?" Vivian shook her head to deny it, but immediately wished she hadn't, the pain rising high enough she stopped walking, dropped her head and put her hands to her temples, feeling as if something was banging around inside her head trying to break out. As she had stopped, so had Karma and Nagisa, both of them looking at her in concern, "Are you ok, Vivian? What's wrong?" Nagisa asked, looking at Karma over her head, his eyes asking if he had noticed anything. Vivian didn't move for a second, letting her body adjust to the pain before straightening her neck and looking at them both, not even noticing Karma's arm was still wrapped around her waist. "I'm fine. Sorry to worry you both, let's keep going." Vivian took a step forward but was halted by the arm on her waist. Looking up at Karma in question, she asked, "Why is your arm around my waist?" Karma smiled, "I feel like it." Vivian tilted her head, "Are you going to remove it from my waist?" Karma's eyes, full of mischief suddenly turned serious, "Why? Am I hurting you?" Vivian contemplated if she should lie and say yes, even opened her mouth to start to tell him it was bothering her, but when she looked between him and Nagisa, seeing the worry in their eyes she instead blurted out, "I ok Razz, I ok." As soon as Vivian said this, she bowed her head again, her face flame red and heating up quickly as she looked at the ground, trying to avoid their eyes. She didn't see Karma and Nagisa quickly look at each other with hope in their eyes over her bowed head. "Could it..." Could it really be her? It has to be. She knew the names only she called us. It can't be a coincidence, can it? Or is this just really wishful thinking?" they both thought. Karma and Nagisa didn't move, so over-come with hope they forgot where they were, that is until Vivian tried to carefully move away from Karma's arm. Quickly realizing this he pulled her back under his shoulder, Vivian froze at the close contact, a part of her ready to break his arm and get him away from him to protect herself from the pain that always came from someone touching her, but a deeper part of her made her body relax, knowing deep down on a visceral level that these two were one of three people in the world she was with one hundred percent certainty safe with. Nagisa came closer so their shoulders almost touched as he spoke, "Well... I guess we should get going, we don't want to make Vivian's dad wait." Vivian started to shake her head, but stopped quickly when the pain started to rise, as she corrected Nagisa, "My Ma- I mean my Father doesn't pick me up, one of his drivers does." Karma and Nagisa had slowly started walking as she had started speaking, Karmas arm still around her waist as he turned to ask, "So I guess your family is rich, huh?" Nagisa frowned at Karma, his arm still a hairs-breadth away from touching her, a fact she was all too aware of as he spoke, "Karma, I think that's a little rude." Vivian smiled stiffly, "Yep, he is well off. He is a scientist and a doctor, after all." The boys both noticed that her smiled seemed strained and that her answer seemed almost forced, as if she didn't want to talk about it so Nagisa quickly changed the subject, "So Vivian, how are you enjoying the E-Class? Do you like it?" Vivian pondered the question, not really knowing how to answer. "Like" was an emotion, and as Vivian didn't have any emotions, she was at a loss for what to say. For some reason, she found herself unable to lie to either Nagisa or Karma, but she also didn't want to tell them the truth about her emotionless state, something deep inside her rejecting that idea completely. So, instead, she decided to question them, "How are you both doing with the whole "assassinate our sensei" thing. Have you both found it hard to adjust?" Karma shook his head instantly, "Nope. I, for one, am actively enjoying myself in this endeavor. What about you, Nagisa?" Nagisa looked deep in thought as he softly replied, "I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet. I don't think I've adjusted. What about you, Vivian? How are you dealing with this?" Vivian stared off in the distance, the door in her mind that locked up all the assassinations, the experiments, the pain, and humiliation she had endured started to rattle, memories starting to rise up to the edge of her consciousness. She jerked her head back and forth, quickly, driving the memories out of her mind as agony filled her head. Vivian's voice was completely monotone, almost dead, as she answered, "I am doing what must be done, and what I have been told to do. Nothing else matters. Not my opinion and not my feelings. Only what I am told. Only that I do what I am told." Vivian was so focused on not thinking about the door in her mind, so focused on holding back all of her painful memories, and on counting her steps to keep her mind blank, she hadn't realized what she said, finding herself telling the perfect honest truth. Trying to figure out what to say to cover up what just happened, she felt both of them looking at her bent head intently, Karma's arm around her waist griping tighter, as if in comfort, for his own sake or for hers she wasn't sure, as they all stood frozen, not moving from their spot in the woods. Nagisa was the first to break the silence, clearing his throat before speaking, "So, uh, Vivian, I was wondering, what's your number? I wanted to text you the other day, but then I realized I didn't have it." Karma seemed to notice Nagisa was trying to change the subject, so he asked as well, "Me too! Is it ok if we swap?" Vivian looked back and forth between the two boys as she tried to decide what to do. She wasn't allowed her phone when at the lab, fear of her using it to break out, tell someone about what was happening inside the building, or even her breaking into their computer system was all valid concerns as she could do all of those things, meaning it had to be confiscated, but telling them that or saying she couldn't give them the number to her phone would also be really suspicious. "Here, hand me your phones, and I'll add my contact info," she said, holding her hand out expectantly. Karma and Nagisa both obediently took their phones out, and once in the contact screen, they handed them over. Vivian quickly typed her name and number into the phones before handing them back. Taking her own phone out of her bag, she passed it around next so they could put their numbers in. When they had finished and passed her phone back, she noticed the time was three twenty -five. She was late! Her whole body froze and started to shake, her eyes wide as she couldn't look away from the clock telling her what she already knew, knowing she would be punished as soon as she got back to the lab. Not wanting to be in any more trouble than she was going to be in, she stepped away from Karma, discreetly using her enhanced strength to remove his arm before he could stop her as she bowed to both of them, the shaking continuing as she spoke, "I-I'm running late. I thank you both for walking me this far and for sharing your cellphone numbers with me, but I- I have to hurry. I'm sorry!" Before either of them could respond, she quickly spun around, and forcing herself to keep up the illusion, she made sure to run only a little faster than someone her size could run, unable to stop herself from trying to get to the car as quickly as possible, hoping against hope that if she explained why she was late that they wouldn't punish her; but she knew that was wishful thinking. When she arrived at the clearing where the driver stood by the open car door with a pocket watch in hand and a fake look of disappointment on his face, "You are late, Vivian. Your Father is not going to be happy." Vivian bowed her head as she slowly walked to the car. When she sat in the seat and the driver closed the door she couldn't help but flinch at the loud thud, already knowing that when she reached the lab, there would be a world of hurt waiting for her, a punishment that she wouldn't soon forget.
