song of the chapter: california dreamin' - the mamas and the papas

The drive was silent and eerie. Bucky and Aurora sat without saying a word as they drove down the windy roads with nothing around them for miles. When they set out, the sky was a shade of ebony but was slowly transforming to reveal an amber hue as the sun began to make an appearance.

Aurora had driven through the night, attempting to follow the dimly lit signs that led them back toward Washington, D.C. Truthfully, neither of them knew where they were going which added to the lack of conversation because neither of them knew what to say either. Things had escalated to such a level in the last 24 hours that they were both slightly shell shocked.

Bucky kept a firm gaze out of the window, glancing into the wing mirror occasionally to reassure himself that nobody was following them. All they had seen for miles was fields and dirt roads, barely illuminated by the reflection of the moon but now the sun was rising - they were both able to get a better view of their surroundings.

Rory looked down periodically to check the time. It was 05:47 am and they were running dangerously low on fuel. She sighed deeply to herself, causing Bucky to roll his eyes at her supposed dramatics.

"What?" He asked bluntly, his eyes feeling heavy from the lack of sleep he had gotten in the last two days.

Rory shot him a look "What do you mean 'what'?" she asked him in a harsh tone.

They had been silent for most of the drive, other than the occasional comment or remark. They were both exhausted so their irritation was understandable but Bucky still found her mannerisms perplexing.

Bucky shook his head "Well you sighed."

"No I didn't, I was just breathing." Aurora rebutted, fighting the urge to engage in an argument with the man beside her. As much as she hated the man beside her, she had to admit that the fact that they even got out of the bunker was down to him as well.

"Well can you try to breathe quieter? Every time you do that it makes me think something is wrong." Bucky responded.

Rory shot him a glare, baffled by the man's comment. "Haven't you heard? Something is wrong, asshole." She snapped "We are practically on the run, we're almost out of gas and I have no idea where we are. We have no money, no way of contacting anyone. We're fucked." Aurora added, keeping a firm grip on the wheel.

With that, Bucky sank slightly in his seat. As much as he would never say it to her face, she was right. "Then what do we do next?" he asked.

Aurora shook her head, desperately trying to rack her brain for what the next best move would be. The blonde ran through a hundred possibilities in her head, all of which landed on calling her dad for help but the last thing she was going to do was alert Nick Fury that she had screwed up just a day after he had left. She couldn't call Steve because he was busy with Sam and based on what she knew about Natasha's history with the winter soldier, she doubted her redhead friend would be eager to help.

That was when it hit her. Rick Mason. Rick was a friend of Fury's and an independent contractor that he used sometimes when in a bind on missions. He had access to resources and means to create passports - all for a fee, of course. He was the right person to call.

"You know, I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for you." Rory exclaimed for no reason other than wanting to make her distaste apparent.

Bucky's eyes widened as he turned to face her slightly "So this is my fault? How'd you figure that one out?".

Rory shook her head "Ironically, I was trying to find you." she stated, reminiscing slightly as to the events of her capture.

The brunette super soldier raised a brow "Me? Why?".
