Dav held Artie. Her mind was too focused on her monster son's dead body being torn apart by the same monsters. The events that brought them there replaying on a loop.

"We must go," Dav whispered.

"Go where?" Artie asked. "Theres nothing left."

Dav looked back at his creation. Wonder and sadness lined his eyes. Artie tried to understand what he was feeling, but nothing came out of it.

"We need to tell people what is inside the dark," he said.

"And what are you going to tell me?" Artie snapped.

Dav turned to her, his expression confused. He goes to open his mouth but Artie cuts him off.

"Our son just died and all you care about is the damn darkness and warning people? You shot him! You helped aid in his death!"

"He would've killed you!"

Artie went quiet. She never wanted Garvil to die. He was going to die eventually, but after a long life.

But she doesn't want to die either. There is so much left to do for Ravka. Spent so much time trying to build the second army from nothing. She's going to see the Grisha thrive in Ravka before she dies.

"We should go," Dav whispered again. "It'll take awhile to get to the palace."

Artie nodded. Together, they start towards the palace. The air is thick with silence and mourning.

Artie turns one last time, looking at the world she's leaving behind her. As she stared at the darkness, only one thing was going through her mind.

Her son was dead. Her "dead husband" is blamed for the creation. They sent in people, both Grisha and normal, all of them died.

A pain hit her deep. A pain that will always be scarred on her heart. A pain that will get better with time, but only if it's not thought of often.

And only then did Adora make a promise to herself.

A promise to never have kids. To never form a motherly bond to any more children. She wouldn't survive if she had to lose another child. To watch them slowly decay when she could've stopped it.

She would be merciless.
