Kenny and Jake Ji's parents were neglectful. When it was just Kenny, they were overwhelmed, but they did try their best to raise him well. After Jake was born, they both just completely gave up. They knew they wouldn't be able to handle raising a second child, yet they still had Jake.
Kenny took over a parental role when he was just four years old. He followed the instructions on the formula container to make bottles of milk for his baby brother and carefully fed him whenever Jake was hungry. He cleaned Jake up and changed his diapers.
As a result, Jake grew up very close with his big brother. Jake knew that although their parents provided them with money for basic necessities, they were never truly there for them. In Jake's eyes, Kenny was both his big brother and his parent.
Due to being parentified at such a young age, Kenny never really had a childhood. He main concerns were taking care of his little brother instead of going out and having fun with his friends.
Kenny only started making friends and socializing with kids his age when he reached high school and Jake was in middle school. Unfortunately, those "friends" were not real friends. They were members of a gang called Manwol, and they recruited Kenny into their ranks. Kenny, not wanting to lose his first friends ever, went along with everything and eventually became an executive.
Even after Kenny was hospitalized and his leg was fucked up, Kenny and Jake's parents never once visited him. It was only Jake and his friends who visited him. Kenny and Jake may not have any present parents, but they had each other.
