Lapis leant forward in her chair, eyes fixed on the clock. Today was the day. She took deep, steadying breaths that did nothing to ease her nervousness and kicked her legs.
After what seemed like an age, the bell signalling the end of the school day rang and Lapis slowly stood up, her heart beating wildly in anticipation. Clearing her school things away, she was out of the classroom door and stood in front of the door leading to the roof in minutes.
She'd slipped a note into Peridot's locker earlier that day telling her to meet her up on the roof, but now she was here, all Lapis wanted to do was run as fast as she could in the opposite direction.
As slow as she dared, she turned the handle and stepped outside.
Peridot, hearing her, turned around. Lapis was so busy being nervous, however, she was oblivious to the heavy blush on Peridot's cheeks.
Lapis walked over to Peridot, opening her mouth. Shuffling, she stared at her feet, mumbling a small "hello".
Peridot seemed lost for words, and just nodded, fiddling with the hem of her shirt.
Lapis spoke up, still not meeting Peridot's eyes. "Um, well, uh, th- thank you for meeting me up here..." Her face aflame, Lapis continued in a rush: "I- I really like you!"
Lapis squeezed her eyes shut and waited in the dead silence that followed.
Assuming that Peridot had rejected her, Lapis turned to leave with tears stinging her eyes.
"W- wait." Lapis was suddenly enveloped by a warm embrace. Was Peridot... hugging her?
It took Lapis a moment to process what was happening, but when she did, her face turned even redder. Her hands automatically encircled Peridot's waist and Peridot looked at her with a small, rare smile.
"I, um, really like you too." Peridot looked to the side, embarrassed. A sudden warm feeling blossomed in Lapis' chest and she hid her face. The stayed like that for a while, not even noticing the click of the lock as the rooftop door was locked.
