As promised, Officer Burke came at noon to take Michael and Beth to foster care. She hated it. She didn't understand why they couldn't just live at home, though. They had plenty of money now that Michael was the owner of the business, so if they ever needed anything, they could get it. Michael was a great replacement for a parent—he'd proved that many times when Daddy was working. So what was the point of sending them to foster care?

"Mikey, I don't wanna go," she whined, clinging to her brother's arm.

Michael sighed heavily. "I know, Bethy. I don't want to, either. But the law is the law—we don't have a choice."

She whimpered quietly, leaning against him for comfort. He wrapped his arm around her, giving her a sideways hug, rubbing her arm soothingly.

About twenty minutes later, she was half asleep when Michael shook her shoulder.

"We're here, Beth."
