Day One

I jump awake clutching at my throat and gasping for air feeling like this is my first breath in ages. I look around frantically I can't identify where I am, I can't remember how I got here, I can't remember anything. I pause in the midst of my spiral when my eyes land on water. My hand is still on my dry throat, and my hands reach out for the water desperate. I gulp down the water as fast as possible "Holy shit!" I hear behind me and I turn around to see a tall blond in the small doorway.

I set the glass back down and eyed the boy suspiciously. He sees the accusation in my eyes and puts his hands up in mock surrender. I quickly search for some kind of weapon as he begins to approach me "Calm down greenie," he tells me but he's too late I lunge for the scalpel on the table. "Calm! Calm! Calm!" The boy says repetitively now backing away from me again. "Where the hell am I? Who are you?" I yell at him as I grip the scalpel tightly as I glare at the boy in front of me.

The boy licks his lips "Just put the scalpel down greenie," he attempts to persuade "Stop calling me that!" I shout before making a break for the doorway. He attempts to grab me and I sink the small scalpel into his arm causing him to scream and retreat from me. I lose the scalpel but keep running trying to find my way out of here. I run past several boys all of them begin shouting and some try to chase after me. When I finally make it outside the sky above me is dark and I can see large stone walls closing us into the space.

I want to stop running but the further I go the more I notice something is wrong. There are no girls, what do they do with them? I can't help but assume the worst, but soon my lungs are screaming for me to stop running. I see tall trees come into view "I just gotta get to the trees," I tell myself as I push forward. Once I'm finally in the cover of the woods my eyes look upwards. I spy a tree with plenty of leaves and branches to cover me and keep me hidden.

I waste no time climbing the trees although the tough wood hurts the soft skin of my palms as I climb. I climb until I can't see the ground, and then I go silent except for the subtle sound of my labored breathing. I can hear rapid footsteps underneath me "Where'd she go?" I hear a faint British accent ask from below "How the hell should I know I didn't exactly ask her where she was going when she stabbed me," I hear the boy from earlier say. I hold my breath and close my eyes tightly terrified to make a sound.

"Can't we leave her till morning? She clearly isn't looking to be found," The boy from earlier says and it's silent for a moment "Gally, she's one of us. She's out here scared and alone. You can go back if you like but someone needs to find her," the British voice says giving a name to the boy I had stabbed earlier. "Suit yourself," Gally tells him and I can hear him stomping away from my tree. I think of the British boy down below and what he said. 'She's one of us' That doesn't sound like they plan to kill me in the least.

I chew on the inside of my cheek as I mull over the words, and begin to start my descent from the tree. "Hello?" I hear the British boy call out as he hears the tree rattle. "I'm coming down," I say and feel surprised at how shaken I sound. When my feet hit the ground I can see a tall skinny boy with dirty blonde hair with a reddish tint. He has light freckles dotting his face and big brown eyes. His eyes held deep concern and he gave me a tentative smile "I'm sorry for the scare love, are you alright?" the boy asks and I nod hesitantly.

"Alright then love, let's get you home," he tells me as he paces a hand on the middle of my back causing a small blush to creep up my neck.
