'What are you doing, Y/N?' Pansy said once we were out of the ballroom. She had just pulled me away from Mattheo and was now questioning what I was doing with him. 'We were just dancing, Pansy.' 'I thought YOU said YESTERDAY that we should tread carefully around him and here you are, dancing and talking with him on the dancefloor.' 'I know, but he asked me to dance. What do you want me to have said?' 'You could have said no.' 'Pansy, he is the first one who has ever asked me to dance at a party... I know what you think of him and I will be careful with him, but one dance can't hurt right?' 'I don't know, Y/N. I just don't trust him. He just got here and he has not taken his eyes of you once. Like, I can't blame him, because you're gorgeous and an amazing person, but... I don't know... something isn't right. I just don't want you to get hurt, okay?' 'I know, Pansy. And I won't. I'll be careful.' 'Good.' 'Now, can we please go back to dancing, because the party has only just started?' I asked her. 'Ofcourse, let's go.'
Pansy and I went back to the ballroom and danced the night away together. Once in a while I sneeked a peak towards Mattheo, but other than that I tried to take Pansy's advice on staying away. She didn't say it with so many words, but it is what she would want me to do.After a long night of dancing, Pansy and I receded back to our dormrooms and said our good nights. The next day, it was time for our first real schoolday of the year. I woke up early, so I could take a quick shower before heading towards the Great Hall for breakfast. When I entered the Great Hall, Mattheo was already sitting at the table together with Theo. With the way I've seen them hang out on the train and during the ball yesterday, I suppose they've known eachother for a longer time than since I met Mattheo on the train. So, I decided to ask them about it once I sat down at the table. 'Good morning, Y/N.' Mattheo and Theo said almost in sync. 'Good morning, boys. How are you doing today?' 'I'm doing quite alright.' Theo responded. 'Me too. How are you doing today, Y/N?' Mattheo asked me. 'I'm doing alright as well. A bit tired from last night, but otherwise good.' It stayed quiet for a few seconds, before I asked my question. 'Guys? Can I ask you something?' Mattheo and Theo looked at eachother before Theo responded with 'Ofcourse'. 'How long have you guys known eachother? Because, it doesn't seem like you met two days ago.' Mattheo chuckled a bit. 'You have a good eye. We indeed did not meet two days ago. We met eachother years ago.' 'How did you meet?' I added. 'Well, you know how my parents "work with" Mattheo's father right?' Theo said, trying not to blatantly tell everyone around us, how his parents are deatheaters. 'Yes.' I responded. 'Well, quite a couple years ago now, my parents took me with them to Mattheo's house. They had to work and wanted me to meet Mattheo. That's how we met. And after that, we quite quickly became good friends and we never fell out. So, here we are.' Theo continued. 'That explains a lot.' I said.
'Well, now you know how Theo and I met. How did you and Theo meet?' Mattheo asked while looking at me. 'Well we met in our first year. I joined Hogwarts together with my sister and Hermione was ofcourse sorted into Gryffindor and since Gryffindors very much dislike Slytherins, I was left to fend for myself. She ofcourse didn't leave me all alone, but we didn't see eachother as much as we did at home. Luckily, I quickly met Pansy. Pansy was there for me when I needed someone and she never left and I never left her either. Sometimes she's more of a sister to me than Hermione and I wouldn't wish any different. After I became close to Pansy, she introduced me to Blaise, Draco and Theo. They all knew eachother before Hogwarts, because of their parents, so I was the new girl in the group. Luckily they all welcomed me with open arms and I'm glad they did, because I don't know what I would've done without them.' 'Well, we wouldn't have known what to do without you either, babe.' A voice said from behind me. I turned around to see a teary-eyed Pansy standing not even two meters behind me. I don't know how much she heard, but she heard enough to get emotional. She gave me a hug from behind and sat down next to me afterwards. 'So, what are we eating?' Pansy said to break the emotional load that was sitting on both of us. I gave a small chuckle before handing her a plate with our favourite; french toast. After breakfast it was time for our first class of the year. It was potions class given by Professor Snape. While in class, we needed to work in groups of two and I was paired up with Mattheo. I had learned a bit about him at breakfast and he had learned a bit too much about me, so I needed to make sure, we didn't get to know more about eachother during this class. But, I don't know what it is about him. Something about him attracts my attention and just makes me curious about him, despite the warnings Pansy gave me. And my curiosity was immensely peaked, once I saw how easy it was for him to brew draught of living death. He knew all the tricks to get the potion brewed perfectly. 'How did you know to crush the Sopophorous bean instead of cutting it?' I asked him. 'It's not the first time I have brewed this potion.' He responded short. 'When did you brew it before?' 'At home. My father wanted me to learn as much wizardry and potionmaking as I could, so I ended up studying a lot and making a lot of potions. After a while, it wasn't studying anymore, but it became a hobby. Some people like flying on their broom, I like reading and brewing potions. It quiets my head.' With any of my other friends, I would've doubted if they were telling the truth, because none of them really loved potions class, but the way Mattheo told me his story, it made me truly believe what he was saying and I could understand it as well. 'I get what you're saying. I have the same thing with writing. It clears my head and quiets it all down for a bit.' He looked up with a raised eyebrow. 'You write?' 'Yes.' 'What do you write?' I instantly regretted telling him that I write. I don't go around telling people that I like to write, because of the fear that they might want to read what I write. But, I couldn't go back now. 'I, for one, write letters.' 'What kind of letters?' 'Letters that are to people who have hurt me or who I can't keep out of my head, for good and bad reasons. I write the letters to get my thoughts out of my head and to sort them out. But, this is all for myself. I never sent the letters out, because the people that the letters are about, don't need to read what I write.' 'Why not?' 'Because, it's not always as nice as I like to be. Most of the time that I write, I'm not in the right headspace. I'm either angry, mad or sad, so I write to get those emotions out. Which sometimes means, that I write things that I don't mean in a later moment.' 'Who have you written letters to?' 'Why do you want to know, Mattheo?' 'I'm just curious.' 'Well, it's not important who I've written these letters to, because they won't ever read them.' I don't want him to know who I've written these letters to. Nobody knows about the letters, especially not the people that they're about. And I don't ever want them to find out about them. Luckily Mattheo let the subject go and ended up finishing his potion well before the others.
During the rest of the day, Mattheo and I weren't paired up anymore and that meant that we didn't speak much anymore. But, over the next couple days, we had more and more classes together. During this time I have learned a lot about him. For example, he loves to listen to classical music, he writes down his thoughts as well, but in a journal instead of letters, and he reads a lot. Next to all of this, I have learned that I love talking to Mattheo. He understands me more than anyone I have ever known. I don't know why, but something about him just feels like he really knows what I'm feeling and thinking.
