Elizabeth Raine hates riddles, games, puzzles, and anything else that involves using more brainpower than the effort she exudes on her schoolwork.
Don't get her wrong, back when she was kid and her father was still around to be one of Tobias Hawthorne's most trusted monetary advisors, she relished the Saturday mornings spent with Mr. Hawthorne and his four grandsons, playing his silly games and letting Xander beat her at chess afterwards so that he could have a win too.
But then her parents got divorced, they all grew up, Liz started something with her best friend's boyfriend(?), and one day, Tobias Hawthorne died. Over time, every moment she shared with the Hawthorne's as if their company was better than her own family's (most times it was) started to fade away and be replaced by the mistakes and regret and guilt that built up in Liz's soul, making her lose sight of what was once the best part of her life.
But that's how time works. People change and evolve and even if it's not always for the better, there's only so much you can do before realizing that not everything can be fixed with nice words and chocolate.
So, when Liz's previously mentioned best friend, Emily, dies, and no amount of talking things out can fix what happened between her and Grayson before, she decides maybe it's for the better that they cut each other off, only interacting through awkward stares in the school hallways before Grayson graduated and silent dinners on opposite sides of the table when she's spending time with one of the other three Hawthorne brothers she hasn't burned a bridge between yet.
But, as stated before, Grayson's grandfather dies, and Liz is called for the will reading, and maybe, just maybe, they realize they need each other more than they thought they did.
