Chapter 1

First person, Percy's perspective

*Seven years later*

*Percy is 6-7, Sokka 5-6, and Katara is 4-5*

My sister and I had recently found out that we can do waterbending. I was so excited to learn, so I try to teach myself constantly. Katara was less excited, Momma says it's because she's not old enough to understand how awesome it is. Momma says that when Katara and I get older she will find a master for us. Until then, I will try and try.

That's why I'm walking to my house. I was trying my waterbending, and I got it to work. I made a wave that reached my ankles. I wanna tell Momma about it.

"Momma, I made a wave with my waterbending!" I yelled, jumping in my house and making a silly pose. My attitude seemed to not match the atmosphere of the room. My Momma was there, but there was also a strange hat man. They both were turned to look at me.

"Hi, strange hat man." I said, kindly. There was an expression of horror on Momma's face. That's weird, I didn't do anything wrong. Was there something on my face?

"You said you were the waterbender." He said to Momma, holding his hands in a threatening way.

"Momma's not a waterbender, silly, I am." I said. Why did Momma lie? She says lying is wrong.

Strange hat man then put these weird metal gloves on Momma and I's hands. Momma didn't like them, but I think they're cool. He then led us to this cool ship. Momma started crying, so I bear hugged her. Our bear hug dissolved into a side hug, as we still wanted to comfort each other but know that something is about to happen.

That was when he started attacking her with his firebending. It was an image that I know will be ingrained in my brain for the rest of my life. It came in stages. First, it separated our side hug, burning my hand in the process. Then, she crumpled to the ground, her skin bright red. A minute passed, but this minute felt like an eternity, and she breathed heavily, then coughed.

And before I knew it, she stopped breathing.

"Momma!" I yelled. I tried to run to her, but the guards held me back. In this moment, my world perspective changes. The 'cool' metal gloves became handcuffs, the 'cool' ship became a warship, and the 'strange hat man' became a soldier and my mother's murderer.

I was brought to a cell. No one was there, so I was left alone to mourn. I'm not aware how long I was in there, but the next time I saw light, we were in the fire nation. And again I was brought to a prison.

It was a waterbender prison, the type of prison that we were told about in scary stories. And I was a prisoner. I was only six, but I knew that there was a chance I'd never be outside of my cell. In that moment, I wished for more than anything else the hugs of my family.

It did not take long for the guards not to like me. I was loud. I was constantly crying and stimming, they found it annoying. It got so bad, they got chi-blockers in so they could allow me to have yard time.

It was my first time outside, and there were several chi-blockers at the ready just in case. I sat in a distant corner, away from others, trying to take it in and be inconspicuous. It did not work. A group of two big, muscley men walked over to me, and being a tiny, scrawny child, I was scared.

"Hey dude." One said.

"Hello." I said, trying to act normal.

"Steven would like to know what section you are from. Steven is curious because he hasn't seen you out here before." One of them asked.

"Who is Steven?" I asked.

"I am Steven." Said the one from before.

Of course he talks in the third-person.

"What do you mean 'sections'?" I asked.

"There are three sections: fire nation people who broke a law, prisoners of war, and the waterbender prison." Another said.

"I'm from the waterbender prison." I said.

"No way, Steven and Dexter were just talking about how we never see people from there." Steven said, referring to the guy that told me about the sections.

After a couple of months, Steven, Dexter, and I became great friends. These couple of months were much better than the ones I spent alone.

One day, Steven and Dexter called me over to where we first met. At this point, they stopped sending extra guards to helicopter-parent me.

"Steven has a plan," Said Steven, making dramatic hand gestures, "A plan to escape."

"What?" I whisper-yelled, "trying to escape will only lead to death. Why do you want to try to escape?"

"We are going to escape because Steven and I have a secret, we're earthbenders." Dexter said, ignoring me.

"Really? You haven't told me before." I tried not to sound it, but I was hurt, I thought we were friends.

"We didn't want to risk any eavesdroppers, if the guards knew we were earthbenders, we would go to a different prison." Dexter explained. He could tell I was upset.

"Tomorrow, Steven will go to you and help you to escape, that is all you need to know." Said Steven.

The next day, I was woken up aggressively. When I opened my eyes, it was Steven.

"Steven and Percy, go and escape." He said, with an urgent tone. I quickly woke up and followed him. We ran through corridor after corridor before we got to the exit to the yard. Dexter was there, waiting.

"Quick Percy, hit this crack in the metal with your bending, then I'll earthbend the ground to make the opening bigger." Dexter said.

As soon as I did what he asked, a siren went off. We all looked at each other and froze in a state of pure horror. Dexter earthbended as soon as he could and we all rushed for the opening. I was the last one to go through, but before I could, I felt a pain in my right eye.

There was a guard and he had just slashed my eye with his dagger. Then it all went dark.

I woke up in my cell, and the jail was on lockdown. Steven and Dexter had escaped, and the only accident in the execution of their plan, left me here.

A/N sorry this is moving so fast. Hope you are liking it!

Bye bye.
