Chapter 11

First person, Percy's perspective

I woke up the next day on a boat. Iroh was sitting there with a troubled expression on his face, staring through me. He didn't seem to realize I was awake until several moments later when he stirred from his daze.

"I must confess, young one, that I had an ulterior motive for bringing you here. I not only wished to bring you here, but away from the Northern Water Tribe. I have a task for you that required it, you couldn't have been there when they were."

"I think Pakku mentioned this to me the other day. Is it the quest? The one to protect the Avatar. Pakku was really weird about the Avatar's companions," I said.

"Although I disapprove of the unprofessional conversing about official business, he was right to warn you. This quest will most likely be the one in your career as a White Lotus member to most challenge your ability to practice one of the organization's most important practices," Iroh said, seeming to grow more haggard by the minute.

"Which practice?"

"The practice of staying out of things."

"We, the White Lotus, aren't the ones that start things and get praise and love, we are the old firm yet gentle hand that keeps this world upright without people even knowing we're there," Iroh said.

"Percy, you can't be seen. You can't. The Avatar's whole group should think that they are the only one's in charge of keeping them alive. The White Lotus cannot afford to be acknowledged right now."

"Go and be strong, for the Avatar and the fate of the world."

I finally found the Avatar.

Iroh only let me search after they left the North Water Tribe and gave me vague directions to where they might be headed. Just as I was told he's traveling with two people from the water tribe, a giant flying bison, and a lemur.

Just as I got close to them, a couple of hippies walked up and started singing to them. I think the only harm these people will bring to the avatar is to his eardrums.

They start following the hippies to a cave.

I'm going to follow them in. I am their guard, but I also elect myself as their chaperone. I don't know what these people are high on, but they must be high on something to be singing that god awful song and taking random children places with no guardians to be seen.

I decided to follow the avatar and one of the people from the water tribe. I only see their backs, but I'm sure it's them. I don't understand why Pakku and Iroh would think this would be hard for me because of the water tribe kids. Do they think I'm underqualified or something? I feel underappreciated. I think we're going to need to schedule some White Lotus heart-to-hearts.

Percy, no. Stay focused.

Ooh now they're talking about kissing.

Oh my Zeus, they're kissing!

They turn around and I see her face, the watertribe girl.

Oh

Tiddlywinks

That's my sister.

This accidental voyeuristic outing has escalated very quickly.

Through all the horrible things that happened to me through my life, I fantasized about seeing my siblings again. I imagined it as an affair with tears, hugging, and happy harp music playing in the background, not witnessing my sister's first kiss.

Later

___

We are finally out of that cave.

I receive a hawk with orders from Iroh not to go to Omashu with the avatar and start trekking the swamp to go to the city of Gao Ling to start looking for a earthbending teacher for Aang, since Iroh recently found out Bumi is incapacitated.

Iroh, in his helicopter White Lotus superior-ing, forgot to mention this swamp is a crazy swamp.

It's like the labyrinth, but less malicious and more natural, more living. I almost feel bad angrily cutting every vine in my path because I keep falling.

I cut every vine in front of me and I still fall. It doesn't make sense.

Until I fall on my face, and am dragged by a Vine into a tree.

"Huu's caught something, Due! I reckon it's a critter ripe for eating!" said a distant voice.

"I bet it tastes like chicken," a second voice says.

"You always think everything tastes like chicken!" the first one said.

I quickly aim to cut the vine with a sword I made with Piandao, and get up a moment before they get here.

"Is not a critter, It's a person," one said, disappointed.

I quickly ran away from the crazy people.

___

A good amount of time passes

___

I'm trekking through the forest, trying to get to the town Iroh asked me to get to when I'm startled by random crying. It came from my right side, I couldn't see who was crying due to my partial blindness in the eye due to past injury, so I came closer for a better look. It was Sokka, he saw me, he was the other watertribe traveling with Aang, it all made sense now, why Iroh and Pakku were so weary. He reached out to touch me and I started running the other direction at full speed.

I try not to cry.

I've found my family at last, but have to stay away. It hurts so much, after a decade of not seeing them, I see everything I have missed in startling detail. When I was taken they could barely talk and I knew everything to know about them, now they're nearly adults and I couldn't tell you their favorite color.
