Chapter 8

First person, Percy's perspective

*Percy is 10*

I went out into the city square, waiting for an opportunity to show itself.

"FISHERS, FISHERS NEEDED!" Yelled a local fisher, looking for an employee.

"Hi, I'm looking for a job." I said.

"You! You're just a little stringbean, I need men ready to be on the open seas by themselves. How old are you five? Go home kid."

Many people then swarmed him.

"You all look like you would do well. How about the first five people who run to the boats behind me get the job, for those five, you start today," He said, laughing a malicious belly laugh.

I ran to the boat and took off with it, not like he would notice anytime soon. I was one of his "new workers" "working" so I would be far, far away when he realized.

I wished not to stop the boat until I got to my destination. Which would be difficult considering my destination is on the other side of the world. The difficulty, however, did not lay in my supplies or gaining my sea legs, but being alone that long.

I had been at sea for 3 weeks. The loneliness grated at my sanity. I had begun hearing disembodied voices.

I was never good sitting still, which my mode of transportation required. Fatigue plagued my body, I could not bring myself to do anything but sit there and fidget, hoping my boat was pointing in the right direction.

Soon enough, I saw the land so familiar to the land that was once my home that is now my destination.

The Northern Water Tribe.

I had been sent to live with Pakku.

It seems letter of my arrival came before I did because I met little resistance at all. I was led to Pakku's home, where Pakku was waiting.

"Come in Percy, I have dinner prepared."

The delicious dinner had a side of the tension that happens between 2 strangers that are forced to be in close proximity alone together. The tension was only broken once, by Pakku.

"I suspect Iroh sent you to me so I could teach you waterbending. Your lessons start tomorrow."

I had grown used to the blind trust that all of Iroh's friends seem to have for him. I always noticed that when Iroh asks Piandao to do something it's a question of when, not if, Piandao gets it done.

............

I had been in the Northern Water Tribe for a little less than two years. I should have expected something to go awry because as soon as I am comfortable, something big happens to tip the scales. It is almost like Fate didn't want me to get too comfortable, they had plans for me.

I had learned a great bit of waterbending, and though there was much more to learn, I could go toe-to-toe. I had settled in.

That was until the strange dream.

Three old ladies spinning yarn.

"You are to be sent to fight for a cause understandably unknown," Said one.

"You will grow to care regardless of the injury," Said another, with a clever smile.

"You will find that your father roams near," Said a third.

"And after, should you survive, you will find that the only consequences within sight, are within." Said the first.

"This is the first, but won't be the last, and should you smile or frown, you are irrevocably bound."

-

And now, dear reader, you will do well to remember that the Fates are not normally this talkative or rhyme-y, but one would also do to remember that the Fates were in their "Ominous Poetry Era"

You might be quick to judge, but they could also be quick with their scissors, so it would be best to support them.

Percy was sent to the land of his father and sent to do tasks already documented at length and known by all.

He was sent multiple times through the next years, always waking up back in his bed in Pakku's house like no time has passed.
