Chapter 9

First person, Percy's perspective

*Percy is 16*

I had been just returned from the war with Gaea. I was still living with Pakku, despite mastering waterbending. To keep me busy he made me start teaching the other students.

We were eating breakfast, when a messenger hawk came with a message for me.

Dear Percy,

The time has come. Your special talents are needed.

Sincerely, Iroh

With the message came a Pai Sho tile.

I looked up at Pakku.

"What does this mean?" I asked.

"What I have long suspected, Iroh thinks of you more than a charity project." Pakku said, because he likes to roast people. I think he does it because he loves me.

"Let's play a game of Pai Sho." Pakku suggested.

"Why, you beat me everytime?" I said.

"Because it's about time I show you the winning strategy."

He was quiet for a moment, probably struggling to find where to begin.

"You do believe knowledge and the arts should be available to everyone, right?" asked Pakku, moving a tile.

"Yes, in an ideal setting that does not seem to exist and probably never will," I scoffed and moved a tile.

"Do you wish for global peace?" Pakku asked.

"More than anything."

"Are you willing to do anything for that peace?" questioned Pakku.

"Anything?"

"Everything."

"No, not everything," I said.

"And why is that? Are you scared? Not willing to put your life on the line?" Pakku asked, aggressively playing his next move.

"No, I'm not willing to put other's lives on the line to reach what I want," I said, assertively.

"Welcome to," Pakku said, carefully sliding his tile into place.

And only then I looked at the board as a whole and saw the pattern.

"The White Lotus."

............

"The WHO?"

"The White Lotus."

"Like the tile?"

"Like the tile."

"Who's in this 'White Lotus' group?" I asked.

Pakku looked at me with the most deadpan expression "Guess"

"I don't know!" I yelled.

"You never thought it was strange that a Fire Nation retired general was friends with so many other older people from other nations his nation tried to conquer?" Pakku asked.

"I thought he was just charismatic, but looking back, this makes a lot more sense," I said.

Pakku made a gesture that basically means, in layman's terms, 'you're stupid'.

"We are all in the White Lotus, a group striving to bring peace, knowledge, and art to everyone while serving the Avatar," Pakku said.

"The Avatar? Striving to bring peace while a retired Fire Nation general seems to be a leader in your little club?" I asked, spiraling.

"The Avatar was found a few weeks ago is the answer to your first question. The answer to the second is The White Lotus loves all nations, not their ideologies and Iroh doesn't agree with Fire Nation ideologies," Pakku said.

"Iroh sent me a message a week ago that he was going to enlist someone to watch the Avatar from far away, only engaging and helping when he says so, and that they will be around the Northern Water Tribe for a while so I should make sure they are taken care of when they are here by providing food, but not shelter." Pakku said.

"So, knowing what we know now, the Avatar is traveling here. We must prepare you food, and pack your things, you will not stay here tonight," He said.

"Wow, so eager to see me gone," I said, teasing him.

"No, you know that's not the case. I'm surprised you haven't rejected this or gotten information overload," Pakku said, in mirth.

"Why would I reject this? You know my character."

"Because the people the Avatar is traveling with, they're from the water tribe."
