Chapter 4: Ominous energy
It's been two weeks since I arrived here in Alytra Village. I've been working to help some villagers here in tending their soil and crops. Helped in hunting every once in a while, outside the village with Robin, Arabel and some of the villagers.
The book that I found in Elder Mang library still remains a mystery to me. I haven't had a chance to ask her about it because she's been busy dealing with the village's affairs, especially that Arabel and Robin's parents are coming.
I learned that Arabel's mother was killed by some beast when they were picking up herbs in the forest when she was young. She said that there are some dangerous beasts lurking deep in the forest and they were only unlucky because they came out that day. While her father along with Robin's parents are in the neighboring village in the west doing their monthly trades. They are expecting to arrive today based on what Elder Mang said.
They didn't doubt her because it's related to her innate ability.
Damn that's a great ability.
I've also learned that there are few mediums here aside from Elder Mang and Arabel. There are 10 to be specific and they all use their power to help the village flourish and protect it. All of them are adults because being a medium is a rare thing here and some of the offspring of a medium ends up becoming an invoker. There are a lot here of all ages. Though there is no school here to teach about crystals and such, they are taught by some mediums from time to time, especially Elder Mang.
I've also been doing some simple exercise and training with Robin every morning to keep my body active. The three of us have been also practicing using our crystal powers and both of them show significant improvement.
Robin's able to take my attack now which is a surprise because I've learned different attack chants using every element. While Arabel can now trigger the 'calling' using short chants while being able to keep the power of the crystal the same when she's using longer chants. It's because when a medium tries to shorten a chant, the manifestation of the 'calling' can have varying effects like lower power output and in most cases – failure.
I'm now watching the two of them train fighting here outside the village. Elder Mang would not permit us using our crystal just to 'play'' according to her.
Robin with his big build is able to endure most of Arabel's attacks. He is a typical guy who always values how his body looks. He's 6 foot tall just like me and has a natural skin color of brown. On the other hand, Arabel's is much shorter than Robin's. She's about shoulder length compared to both of us. She has a pale skin which is a contrast to her personality when it comes to fighting. Her attitude when it comes to fighting is a little dark and it scares me a little.
"Water missile!" She shouted. Multiple water balls immediately appeared around her and it was shot to Robin's location at great speed.
Robins was about to dodge when Arabel chanted again.
"IGNITE!"
All the water missiles heading towards Robin exploded and created a large amount of smoke. Arabel proudly smiled and looked at me.
Damn. That would've hurt.
"I learned that from you!" She faced me and cheered like a 5-year-old.
However, that smile quickly faded when Robin appeared out of the smoke and ran towards her. She didn't have enough time to chant and Robin acted like she was about to punch her.
"OUCHHH!" She yelled, holding her forehead. Robin apparently flicked her. "I told you not to do that!" She added almost on the verge of crying.
"And I told you to never let your guard down" Robin was about to flick her again when I intervened.
