"And then your mom said 'hey JJ why don't you just join us for dinner?' and it's not like I could say no. But who knew your mom was like Gordon Ramsey, she was tearing it up with that pasta." June March was laid on JJ Maybanks arm, his finger tracing lines up and down her back as she drew hearts into his chest with her own hand. She had been listening to him talk for what felt like hours, explaining what had unfolded at her house before she had come home. He was beyond happy it seemed, the words flowing out of him freely and with ease as he held her in his arms. This was all he had ever wanted, just her...with him.
In all honesty after the confusion had cleared she thought it was a sweet gesture for him to show up and ask for her fathers blessing. He probably had forgotten she was angry at them, so she didn't blame him for thinking it would be okay. While most of the time she spent laying there was her focusing so intently on him and his words and how he pronounced them and how perfect being here with him felt, her mind did stray momentarily to the office in the Harris tailor. She tried to recall everything she had seen in there in the few moments she was inside, before Erika had interrupted her. She tired to think of anywhere that safe could've been, anywhere at all. But then she tuned back into JJ words, her head tilting back so she could look at him.
She watched as his lips moved, and he was describing how weird it was that her dad didn't even seem to mind him now. His eyelashes were long and every time he blinked she watched as they fanned his face. He was speaking so passionately and he had a permanent smile imbedded onto his face, making the corner of her own lips lift. She remembered the first time they had done this, how they had laid in bed and talked and she had given him that stupid nickname. He was always so beautiful like this. He was relaxed, you would think no time had passed and the two of them had never stopped being together, everything felt so familiar. She could almost be tricked by it all. She knew there was so much more to talk about, not fight about but talk about, but most of all she needed to know what this meant for them. Her eyes were glazed over and soft as she lifted her hand from his chest and to his chin, her thumb running over his bottom lip. JJ closed his eyes as the familiar motion reminded him he was at home, in the safety of her presence where he felt the best.
"You okay?" He asked, his fingers gripping her hand and pulling it down from his mouth. He looked at her with the softest gaze and she melted, wondering how she could've ever lied to herself and told herself she was moving on.
"I'll give you another chance." The words were low and intimate, almost like sweet nothing whispered to him. He got a hopeful look in his eyes and he felt his chest tighten as he looked down at the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. Giving him another chance. This day was full of shocking wins for him. He smiled down at her and lowered his head to kiss her but she stopped him, her eyes wide and sweet as she spoke. "If you give me one."
"You didn't do anything."
"I did...but I'm asking for forgiveness." It was strange being in this spot, reconciliation. She was still hurt and angry, she was still working in forgiving him, but she could no longer be without him. Maybe things would be different this time.
"I forgive you." He said it and meant it, the boy closing the space between their lips and kissing her. He wanted to stay here forever, but they both knew they couldn't. June pulled back first with a smile on her lips, feeling relieved that she was being true to herself again. June began to traced into his chest again, hearts...how in love she was feeling. But her mind was reeling soon after and she sucked in a breath, pushing some hair from his face and then turning over onto her elbows. JJ lifted his hand, a smile on his lips and she grabbed it before he could touch her, the girl bringing it to her lips and kissing it. He felt a pit of giddiness in his stomach and he knew this must've been one to the most important moments of his life.
