This Year

   5:32 pm

Her eyes were glued to her figure, turning every-each way in a body mirror centered in the corner of her bedroom.

She tried on a couple of outfits until she just narrowed it down to a simple dark-lavender strapless mini dress, some old sneakers, and a purse she got from a couple of birthdays back.

Her hair was pulled into two pigtail braids that fell right below her shoulders, and her mom's old necklace laid flat above her chest.

Regardless of all the judgmental stares she mentally prepared herself to encounter at the house party she and Astrid were going to, Franny just wanted to make sure she at least looked decent before diving headfirst into a blood bath.

It was kind of crazy though. She used to be a bit of a tomboy just like Astrid and was never really into makeup or dressing up until she met him.

But last year, Franny spiraled.

She lost herself and had reached the lowest point she'd ever imagined being. It was ignominious and she knew deep down, no matter how many apologies or AA badges she flashed to prove she had changed, no one would forget about what happened.

It'd been a couple of days since she'd been back from a rehab center on the mainland, and no one knew since her mom was hesitant to let her go out. But there's always been an exception.

" Franny," she flinched, turning her head toward her room door, taken aback by her mom's call for her from downstairs." Astrid's here."

Her eyes widened from the mention of her best friend, and a sense of relief fell over her. She mumbled "shit" to herself while tripping over a pile of clothes she had recently tried on for an outfit. She stumbled out of her room urgently trying to get downstairs, hearing a familiar laugh intertwined with her mom's had her running faster.

" Easy Fran, slow down." Her mom smiled, watching her daughter leap from the last stair step to fold her arms over Astrid's, twirling her around in an overdue embrace.

" Jesus, Ryan's, who died?" Astrid joked from the overdramatic hug she was still pulled into.

" Shut up," Franny laughed teary-eyed into her best friend's shoulder, " I missed you like crazy."

Astrid and Franny were sisters. Not biological or anything but they grew up together and got really close on the cut, which is basically the opposite of Figure 8 in a nutshell. You know, working-class, low-income, and also home to the best people you'd ever meet, the pogues.

Just like Rafe though, Astrid was known around the Island for things too.

She was JJ's baby sister, by a year and three months. A mild kleptomaniac when it came to anything overpriced, never took shit from anyone, ironically, and she was loyal to Franny through the good days and the awful ones.

Anyways, they'd always been inseparable. Except for last year.

" Astrid, I want her back before ten," her mom mentioned, as the two girls abruptly forgot she was still standing there.

" Yes, Janet." Astrid sang, tossing an arm over Franny's shoulder as they head out the front door.

" Franny," Fran sighed, reluctantly turning her head around to face her mom. " No drinking. No Rafe, I'm serious."

She hesitated for a second before flashing a reassuring smile and a quick nod. " Okay."
