Chapter 5: brothers and their gifts

When her brothers arrived escorted by their father Shiera remained with Aemond while they went to Aegon and Daeron. The age difference between nephews and uncles didn't affect them. Even though the queen seemed to think her sons above Rhaenyra's the children liked to spend time together.

Aegon, Jace and Luke seemed to get along with their shared love for their dragons. Aegon took it upon himself to teach Jace and Luke how to bond with their dragons. Meanwhile Helaena and Daeron seemed to share an interest in outdoors activities with a passion for animals of all sizes. From insects to horses and cats. Aemond, on the other hand, seemed interested solely and exclusively in Shiera.

Since their meeting, and excluding a few days where they had been to Old Town to visit their family, Aemond had always been attached to her. He started following Rhaenyra whenever she went with baby Shiera and made sure to let other people know that looking down on her would mean to deal with their suden exile at being found guilty of some charge.

Shiera didn't complain about his attachment, she liked being with him and found it comforting to have someone around her guiding her and making sure she didn't bump into anything or anyone.
Although she now knew the Red Keep in and out this didn't mean that she navigated smoothly across it.

This pairing between them didn't bother anyone much save the queen so it was quite true to say that where one went the other would surely appear.

Obviously this didn't mean that between the children small pranks didn't occur. It was well known that sometimes Aegon had a small mean side that, when bothered by her mother, he tended to bring up.

"Aemond I have a little surprise for you" He said once that all the children became a little suspicious. Shiera, who sensed something was wrong and had her hand in Aemond's, gave him a little squeeze letting him know that he didn't have anything to fear as she was there with him.

"What is it?" He said giving Shiera a squeeze as well letting her know that nothing was going to happen. He knew what happened this morning between his brother and mother and expected a childish way of dealing with hurt by his brother.

"Something very special," At that, Aegon descended into the dragon pit and they could hear him as he continued to explain to Aemond the situation. "You are one of the only Targaryens without a dragon"

"Indeed but it's nothing to be ashamed of" This didn't conversation didn't seem like it was going to come to a good end so Shiera made an attempt to stop it.

"Well I feel bad about it so I found one for you" At that Aegon came to view. He was carrying something in his hands and when he came closer and everybody saw the petrified egg in his hands they shared uneased glances. The egg itself was beautiful, with black and purple scales that seemed to glow when the light touched it.

Although they didn't hate each other Aegon and Aemond had really different personalities so this small prank played by the older brother could be seen as harsher from the younger brother's point of view.

"Here, the gods provide" He said while he extended the egg towards Aemond.

"What is it, Aemond?" Shiera asked. It was at these moments that she really wished she could see. And now, that it looked like Aemond had received something meant to bother him, she knew that she had to do something to take some heat out of the issue.

"He is giving me a petrified egg Era" He really wasn't impressed by his brother and his tactics of causing mischief.

"Well, that's good isn't it? We can care for it together and maybe the gods will be good to us and it will hatch" She felt a hunch that made her believe that maybe she wasn't really wrong about what she just said.

"Of course we can. And if it doesn't we could find another. Thank you Aegon your gift is well received" By the face Aegon did it seemed that the outcome of his prank hadn't been what he expected so with a huff and a half-felt farewell the issue had seemed to end without much fuss. And everyone at the dragon pit decided it was time for them to return to the keep.

Some years later they would talk about this as the moment that changed the future of history forever.
